ISSUE 121 SEPT/OCT 2024
MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS AUTUMN
Welcome to our September/October edition, an unwelcome indicator that summer is over. Fear not, however, there is much to look forward to this autumn. PLUMBEX Dublin is coming to the RDS Simmonscourt over September 11-12 – register now to enjoy free entry and parking, complimentary refreshments, an exclusive goody bag and show- only offers from an impressive array of exhibitors. And later this autumn, the Northern Ireland Plumbing & Heating Awards 2024 is set to recognise leading individuals, companies, products and projects in the industry at a gala awards evening in Titanic Belfast. See p16 for information on how to enter before the deadline of Friday, August 30. In the meantime, this edition includes features on Commercial Plumbing & Heating, Gas Heating & Safety and Heat Pumps, as well as a project profile of an energy-efficient heat pump installation at the new AgTechUCD Innovation Centre in Co Kildare. A new UK government is in place since our last edition, with Labour securing a landslide victory in the July 4 General Election. All eyes will be on whether it delivers on pledges to invest in clean energy, housing and infrastructure, particularly after new Chancellor Rachel Reeves identified a £22bn shortfall in public finances. A TEMPORARY JOB HELPING TO MOVE STOCK AT A PLUMBERS’ MERCHANT HAS EVOLVED INTO A LIFELONG CAREER FOR PTS IRELAND REGIONAL DIRECTOR KEN KINKEAD…
Celebrating 40 years in the plumbing and heating industry
As a young man, Ken Kinkead had set his sights on following his father into bricklaying, but it didn’t quite work out that way. Recession in the early 1980s had left construction jobs in short supply and so, on May 7, 1984, Ken headed to a plumbers’ merchant on the Grosvenor Road in Belfast, where he had picked up a few days’ work helping to move stock. The merchant was Spendlove C Jebb, a family- run business established in 1968 and acquired by leading UK plumbing and heating supplier Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS) in 2006. Back then Ken would not have guessed that 40 years later, he would still be with the business but in a senior management role, having overseen its expansion to include seven branches across Ireland supported by a regional distribution centre. “Little did I know that 40 years on, I would still be making my daily commute to Grosvenor Road,” said Ken. “Along the way I have met many inspirational characters who have left a lasting impression on me and helped me on my journey. “To the original Spendlove C Jebb business and the Jebb family, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this wonderful industry. To suppliers, customers and colleagues past and present, and friends, thank you all for the support over the last 40 years. What a wonderful industry to be part of, with
so many opportunities.” Ken’s progression into his current role was gradual, with those first few days shifting stock evolving into general duties in Spendlove C Jebb’s warehouse and a stint as a delivery driver. A few years followed in the stock ordering and administration side of the business, before he was offered the opportunity to get out on the road as a sales representative. It was a role in which Ken thrived and soon he was tendering for contracts, including a successful bid to supply plumbing materials to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) in 2000. Ken went on to manage the prestigious NIHE contract and, in 2006, when PTS acquired the Jebb family business, he secured a promotion to oversee its three branches in NI. Under his stewardship, PTS rolled out its island-of- Ireland presence to branches in Belfast Grosvenor Road, Belfast Duncrue, Lisburn, Enniskillen, Derry/ Londonderry, Newry and Dublin, with a central distribution centre in Lisburn. Over the years, Ken’s interests and hobbies have included cycling, travelling, hosting golf days for customers and fundraising for charities including Cancer Fund for Children. And throughout the four decades, he has also maintained a passion for his job. “I was lucky enough to be given the opportunities to

gradually progress to my present position,” said Ken. “It hasn’t really been a regular nine-to-five job; there are long hours involved but I enjoy the work and have no complaints. “It’s always been like that, when you’re behind the scenes keeping things moving. It has been
challenging, but the day you don’t enjoy the challenge is the day you need to go. “I am grateful to be in this position and it’s not just about the work, it’s about the people you meet, many of whom have become friends outside of work.” T: +44 (0)28 9027 1600 www.ptsireland.co.uk

FOCUS ON COMMERCIAL PLUMBING & HEATING
MANUFACTURER - DAB PUMPS
Evoplus Lite.
DAB PUMPS HAS LAUNCHED A NEW RANGE OF CIRCULATING PUMPS FOR HEATING, AIR CONDITIONING AND HOT WATER, IDEAL FOR LARGER RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS… Pairing rugged design and efficiency with low energy consumption
A new energy-efficient circulator pump for heating and air-conditioning applications, Evoplus Lite, has been launched by Dab Pumps Limited. Suitable for use in both residential and commercial applications, in particular larger buildings, the wet rotor circulator pump is ideal for systems demanding efficiency, reliable performance and versatility.
Long-lasting, it requires no further attention post-installation outside of routine maintenance. Key to its versatility is a motor head which can be turned to three different positions to accommodate requirements of even the tightest spaces. SIMPLE INSTALLATION Evoplus Lite is installed in a few easy steps. With just one connector to plug in, this plug-and-play unit is easy and practical, even in systems where space is tight or in awkward replacement situations. With a single button set-up, the installation interface is intuitive with an easily read seven-segment LED display, while its low-maintenance set up means once it’s up and running, you forget it’s even there. FORWARD-THINKING DESIGN Evoplus Lite has been designed from the outset to be reliable. Increased separation between the motor and electronics results in better thermic insulation and safer use
during air conditioning, when systems tend to be more prone to condensation. Direct access to the motor shaft makes for easier maintenance; for example, releasing and optimised operation, enabling quick and easy venting. SUMMER MODE With the Summer Mode function, even if the circulator pump is not running, its electronics are active. Every 25 hours, Evoplus Lite comes back on, circulating the water long enough to stop limescale residue building up, which could otherwise clog the system. CHOOSE YOUR PERFORMANCE You can also choose Evoplus Lite’s performance level. The circulator pump’s electronics can vary motor rpm, and consequently absorbed power, to achieve up to six different performance levels (curves). That way, Evoplus Lite’s setting will be matched extremely accurately to the system’s specific requirements.

consideration include the different needs of the various rooms and whether different branches within complex systems may be opened or closed. Electronically-controlled wet rotor pumps offer consistent performance, in practically all correctly-sized systems, ensuring a sufficient amount of energy at all times and, at the same time, quieter operation and greater comfort with a considerable reduction in running costs. AIR-CONDITIONING APPLICATIONS Unlike conventional electronic pumps, Evoplus Lite electronic circulator pumps can also be used in air-conditioning systems where the temperature of the pumped fluid is lower than the ambient temperature. Even in these conditions, the condensation that forms on the outside of the circulator does not affect the operation of either the pump’s electronics or its mechanical components. The special design has been engineered and sized accordingly to allow the condensate to drain away without damaging the components making up the pump.

SUPPLIER - ALTERNATIVE HEAT
PART OF THE NIBE GROUP SINCE 2019, RHOSS CONSTANTLY IMPROVES AND INNOVATES ITS SYSTEMS ALONGSIDE THE EVOLUTION OF THE HEAT PUMP MARKET… Alternative Heat boosts its renewable offering with new partnership
Banbridge-headquartered Alternative Heat has partnered with Italian heat pump manufacturer Rhoss to enhance its renewable offering. Alternative Heat is a privately- owned company with over 19 years of experience and expertise in the design, supply and comissioning of renewable heating systems. Founded in 1968, Rhoss is based at a 90,000sqm purpose-built site including a dedicated R&D facility in Codroipo, Italy. The company became part of the NIBE Group in 2019, enhancing an already good reputation in the commercial heat pump sector. With the heat pump market constantly evolving and a clear mandate in place to decarbonise existing and future buildings, Rhoss provides a single manufacturer solution. New 2024 F-gas regulations set a very stringent target of GWP <150 from 2030, with the commercial heat pump market experiencing a major transition pairing systems and technologies with the most suitable systems. Rhoss’ ability to embrace this change is evident with the recent release of its UniPACK-P (R290) and FullFLOW BOOSTER I ECO (R1234ze,R515B) models. Jamie Byrne, Renewables Manager at Alternative Heat, said, “This partnership with Rhoss offers exciting opportunities as the market drives towards decarbonisation. Not many manufacturers supply this range of Eurovent certified products from 45kW to 2MW. “Air source, water source and polyvalent (simultaneous heating and cooling) products ensure Alternative Heat can offer the right solution in both heating and cooling applications.”

Featuring Navien’s ON and ON AI technologies, the NCB ON Boiler range is the right choice for smaller businesses looking for the capabilities of a commercial boiler with the added benefits which domestic units have to offer.
NAVIEN UK TECHNICAL DIRECTOR SEAN KELECHER EXAMINES HOW HEATING AND HOT WATER APPLIANCES DESIGNED FOR HOUSES COULD ALSO BE USED IN SMALLER COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES… Installing domestic boilers in commercial spaces with Navien UK
Domestic and commercial properties often require completely different heating and hot water systems to match their size while still meeting the needs of those who use them. However, a commercial boiler may not be necessary for many Irish businesses, allowing installers to offer a more fitting and cost-effective alternative.
properties. This can be applied to various commercial premises, but the factors will differ for each business. For example, some businesses would benefit from a combi boiler designed for a medium-sized home, such as the Navien NCB500 ON AL Combi
The NCB500 ON, NCB700 ON and Navien’s NPE Water Heater provide an ultra-high efficiency rating of up to 107.2%, offering consistent hot water without a drop in flow rates, all from a single unit.

Crossover, which provides up to 41kW of hot water output. While businesses such as gyms and salons could also benefit from this system, they would require an additional water heater. The Navien NPE Water Heater, for instance, provides instant hot water continuously, effectively meeting the demand for customer-facing hot water outlets in these settings.
“The NCB ON Combi Crossover range is a dream for installers, offering highly efficient capabilities in a compact unit.”
The NCB ON Combi Crossover range is a dream for installers, offering highly-efficient capabilities in a compact unit. It provides the power of a high-performance system boiler with the cylinder-less advantages of a compact combi model, making installations hassle free. For business owners, installing a boiler designed for the home instead of a dedicated commercial option could help reduce their energy usage and bills. With the NCB ON Combi Crossover range, which offers an ErP rating of A+ when used with Navien’s ON AI controller, business owners have access to a host of data to help reduce their energy usage, all of which is accessible via one convenient mobile app. To discover the full range of boilers available from Navien, visit www.navien.co.uk/professional
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT Traditionally, a commercial boiler offers 70kW or more to provide sufficient power for a wider reach throughout the property. Domestic boilers can range between 50kW and 70kW for
larger homes and, when well maintained, will typically last longer than commercial boilers. And while commercial properties require these larger systems, many businesses such as smaller high street stores, newsagents and local cafes have the same, if not lower, requirements than domestic
Small offices, however, could benefit from a domestic boiler made for a larger home, such as the Navien NCB700 ON Combi Crossover. These larger, more powerful systems can heat up to 30 radiators, making them a great choice for smaller businesses looking to heat their properties at a lower cost.

FURTHER STRENGTHS Near zero GWP solution
The use of R290 refrigerant, with ultra- low GWP (Global Warming Potential = 3), guarantees a negligible environmental impact compared to traditional solutions. This makes the range perfectly in line with the latest step of the phase-out plan for HFC refrigerants approved by the EU. Advanced technology Inverter scroll compressors, high-efficiency DC fans with variable speed control, copper aluminum coils with hydrophilic treatment and a drain tray with a dedicated electric heater are some of the technologies available that facilitate high efficiency values, meaning a reduction in operating costs. This ensures negligible start-up current and perfectly matches the cooling load of the plant in any conditions.
