David Bateman-Smith – South West College NI/Ashley McFarland Plumbing & Heating.
Two apprentices from Northern Ireland are among eight regional qualifiers set to compete in the SkillPLUMB 2024 UK final at Oldham College over November 20-21. David Bateman-Smith (South West College/Ashley McFarland Plumbing & Heating) and Jack Fenton (Belfast Met/Ian Reid Plumbing & Heating) placed first and second, respectively, in the SkillBuild NI Regional Competition 2024 hosted by CITB NI at South West College in Enniskillen on May 21. Following completion of the regional heats, David and Jack’s scores placed the two apprentices within the top eight performers qualifying for the national final. Two additional NI apprentices, Morgan Finney (Northern Regional College/CFM) and Tristan McGrath (South West College/Damien Hinnigan), are among the next three highest-scoring reserves ready to step in if any of the top eight are unable to compete. National final competitors will tackle a complex task installing a central heating system and hot/cold water system, incorporating a boiler, unvented hot water cylinder and associated pipework and bespoke- designed copper radiators. In a first for this year, competitors will demonstrate their low-carbon skills in a heat pump task developed in collaboration with headline sponsor Ideal Heating. Top performing apprentices who are age eligible could also be in with a chance to compete at WorldSkills 2026 in Shanghai, China. SkillPLUMB is organised by industry charity BPEC and is part of the WorldSkills UK competition framework. www.bpec.org.uk/skillplumb SWC AND BELFAST MET APPRENTICES TO COMPETE AT SKILLPLUMB 2024
