Friends would be incredulous as I begged them to take down photographs of me. Recently I asked my son to send me a photograph where I had drunk so much that I'd fallen asleep in the garden chair. This photo is hideous, I have bleary eyes, my hair is standing on end, and I look vacant. I hate the photo but it is a (private) memory for me of a time I do not want to go back to. It’s important that I have this memory, and for the record, this one is for my eyes only! I want to ask you to do something for me. Go as far back as you can on your camera and start looking through your photographs. Try to remember how you felt at the time, and more than that, look at the actual context of the photo. What memory does it bring? Do you feel happy? Are you happy that you documented it?
And I bet you think that you look so much better than you felt you did then, and are happy to have been reminded of the memory.
Let’s firmly position ourselves in photographs. Let’s talk ourselves up, and let’s make sure that we are as visible as we can be. Even if like me your face contorts and gurns when trying for a ‘natural’ smile, let’s just go for it. Our future generations will thank us for it.
