a u D u r i n g t h e international assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Sept. 1-8, a most tragic event occurred. A mentally- deranged man, who “hated buses,” forced off the road a bus carrying a group of Jehovah’s Witnesses to their meetings. His car intentionally ran into two of the men as they alighted from the vehicle and one, Harold Mather, was seriously injured. Rushed to the hospital, he was informed that surgery and blood transfusions would be required to save his life, but he refused. His wife, also a Jehovah’s Witness, stood by him, and approved his decision, although their nine-year- old child begged him to sign the re lease so that the doctors might save him. He refused to the end and died at 38, leaving a fatherless child. Actually, this sad death was utter ly unnecessary, senseless, and cruel. It was due to a misinterpretation of Lev. 17:11-12 and other Scriptures which have to do with the consump tion of blood of animals, and nothing whatsoever to do with human blood — and certainly not for life-giving and life-saving human blood transfusions for medical purposes. In a book of doctrine summary published by the Watch Tower of the Jehovah’s Wit nesses, entitled, “Make Sure of All Things,” pages 47 and 48 are given to their view of blood transfusion which they define as “ feeding upon blood.” This perversion of Scripture is typi cal of all the doctrines of this false system which is anti-Trinity, anti government, and anti-organized re ligion. They reject the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ and His literal res urrection, and the Bible teaching of hell and eternal punishment. They re fuse to bear arms, and are opposed to any kind of military service, even non-combatant; they will not salute the American flag; they teach erron eously that the Second Coming of Christ took place in 1914 (for their founder, Charles T. Russell had so predicted) but that He is invisible, waiting to lead the battle of Arma geddon which will cleanse the earth of all elements not in conformity with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is a heart less religion, as Mr. Mather’s death indicates, offers no atoning Saviour, no Heaven and no Scriptural truth.
