and immovable because it is resting on Zion’s Rock; not blown about by every wind of doctrine; not afraid of any evil tidings; not swayed by the storms of uncertainty arid doubt. Energy (Boaz is said to mean “fleetness”)—power and willingness to do the work which God has appointed; not soon wearied in the task; much less desirous of mere passive spiritual enjoyment. Such two-fold strength is the gift of God The pillars were made by Solomon, the pre-Christian Prince of Peace; their antitypes are infused into the character by our Lord Himself. “We have no power of ourselves to help ourselves,” nor to be of real use either to Him or to our follow men. It is Only the Master Builder Who can raise Jachin and Boaz in the sanctuary of the human heart. Not of brass are thgy, as were Solomon’s, but of gold—priceless and indestructible. But, like those in the ancient Temple, they should be adorned with pome granates and with lily work. Strength should be crowned with beauty, and energy should be productive of fruit. Without these the one may degenerate into mere brute force; lacking them, the other is purposeless and incomplete. There is no more fascinating picture in the Holy Book than this: power luminous with a halo of softening glory, and zeal bearing fruitage for the harvest floors of Heaven. God give these gifts to every one of u s! ¿Mr N ovember 17. “Neither do I condemn thee.’’ —Jno. 8:11. IT needs the brush of an Archangel, dipped in the pigments of the skies, adequately to depict the scene. The stohy-hearted, brazen-tongued Scribes and Pharisees, clamoring for the poor woman’s destruction, with no recollection of their own sinfulness and deserts—-and the sad, tender face.and pitiful eyes of the Lord against Whom she had sinned. What a contrast between earth’s attitude to sinners and that of Heaven! What a rebuke to those of us who, in our own proud self-righteousness, are ready to call down fire from the skies upon the erring, and who shrink with loathing and disgust from those' whom we call “the out cast and the vile.” How little we understand what spirit we are of when we adopt such a position; how utterly we fail to fathom the love of the Divine Heart for the fallen sons and daughters of men! It was not that He made any excuse for iniquity; it was not the sin which He refused to condemn, but the poor, unhappy creature who had committed it. To hate the sin, but to love the sinner, is a lesson which every disciple of the Master needs to learn. To clamor for the condemnation of others, is to invoke judgment on ourselves. We may learn from this incident that there is forgiveness for every trans gressor, let the offense be what it may. No penitent ever stood trembling, with unshed tears, in the presence of the Redeemer and was sent uncomforted away; “The heart of Christ Will no poor heart of man condemn,” so that heart be burdened with the penitential sense of sin. We, too, may be pardoned much, and, being so, let us learn much to love, so that we may be ready to forgive all. IH r a H N ovember 18. “My jewels." —-Mai. 3:17. GOD never tires of finding names for His people with which to indicate the high position they occupy in His esteem. They are His sheep, His lambs, His chosen ones. They are “a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD.” In this passage He sets forth their untold worth by calling .them His jewels. They are of infinite and inestimable value in His sight.
