history of the class

2000 The year started horribly with the loss of former class President Nick Yeoman, a real loss to the sailing community. Purple Marine/ Winder Boats exhibit it’s new FRP hull at the Dinghy Show on their own stand while Butler Boats also exhibit an FRP hull along with a Thresher, minimally fitted out and in stark contrast to Gordon’s gosling in 1999. Will Loy takes over as Mag Editor again for a short stint. British Steel changed it’s name to Corus Colours Sailing Club. Jim Hunt won 8 races out of 10 in the Purple/Cumulus powered Winder 4278 at Tenby with Pete Cumming third in another Winder, so starting a sea change to FRP ‘off the shelf’ production, assisted by the limited resource of decent timber. Incidentally, Carveth was second in a Crawshaw all wood build. Hunt won the Endeavour Trophy with Paul Hobson in an RS400. Barry Bone reported that his Thresher, Tony’s first ever Solo 3420 was alive and well and still performing well at Tonbridge Town S.C and in the ‘for sale’ section you could acquire the 1990 winning Duffin 3726 for £1750. Hunt wins the inaugural Nation’s Cup in brassmmermeer which replaces the World Trophy in 4278 marking the beginning of the FRP dominance. Hunt also wins the national title at Tenby and the inland title at Graham. Chief Measurer and Hon. Treasurer/Measurer class cornerstones Jim Gates and Ron Green donating the trophy. There was the sad news that one of the solo class founders, Helen turnbull had passed away. We continue to remember her every year when the turnbull trophy is awarded to the first junior. The class adopted category c advertising thus allowing nice big stickers on our sails and hulls. Ben Ainslie (laser), robertson (europe), Percy (finn) claim gold in sydney with barker and hiscocks (49er) and walker and covell (star) silver.
