2002 Gordon Barclay steps into the very big shoes left by Chief Measurer Jim Gates who had learnt the trade under the watchful eye of Frank Mountifield in 1975 before going on to become the Chief Measurer in 1984. His son Roger won the National title in 1978 and daughter Ann won the Ladies title in 1983. Ron would also step down as Hon Treasurer but he and his lovely wife Mavis continued to assist with measurement matters. Ron’s attention to detail was second to none. The class really are indebted to Jim, his wife Zena, Ron and Mavis for their incredible service, they protected Jack Holt’s design while allowing a slow evolution in the days when tweaking of hulls was possible with every build.
