history of the class

2004 Tom Davis steps down as class President, replaced by Steve Ede, Liz Barclay stepping into the role of Publicity Officer and with Doug Hughes in charge of the website, the class was undergoing some invaluable social media improvements. Garda was the venue for the Nation’s Cup, won by Ian Houston. 61 new builds were registered. Gordon Barclay had the task of racing his Solo around the East End Dockyard at the London Boat Show which went down well from a publicity angle. Tony Thresher clarified that the FRP hull which he was decking was from his own mould. The package was very much aimed at the home build enthusiast. Boon and Crawshaw displayed their beautiful wooden Solos at the Dinghy Show and you could purchase a Solo shirt for £28, the strap line ‘for a better sailing experience’ emblazoned across the chest. A rare EGM at the Winter Champs legalised a small change to the boom section. National Champion Dan Vincent (Plymouth, 63 entries) finished third at the Endeavour Trophy, crewed by Roger Gilbert in an RS 400 and there were 101 entries at the Inland Champs, won by Andy Davis. Treasurer John Davey reported that we had 1003 members. 8 Winders filled the top 8 positions at the Nationals, Thresher and Boon completing the top ten in the hands of Rob Vincent and Andy Couch. It was also where Gordon Barclay showed off his mast strut which was designed to reduce mast deflection. HISC was the top club for NSCA members at 28 while 94 clubs across the UK registered 1 or more. In Athens, Ainslie (Finn) and robertson (yngling) took gold with rogers and glanfeild (470) silver and draper and hiscocks (49er) and dempsey (mistral) bronze.

Gordon barclay claims the money shot in his gosling ‘a fitting choice’.
