history of the class

2013 Boatyard at Beer develop their new Solo with Kevin Driver, Ian Teasdale, Jo Richards and Phil Morrison the skilled builders behind the shape. Geoff Carveth would use the first one at the National Championship, finishing third. Ovington Boats were producing the JP FRP hull, the fine bow profile standing out against its rivals. Class President Roger Gravatt puts forward the idea of a tweaked B Plan sail, same height as the A Plan but 10% narrower, this was ruled against at the AGM. The use of mast head floats was discussed and I understand a change in the wording would allow them to be used whilst racing. A rule change to ensure the transom was built perpendicular to the base line was agreed. Several of the Speed hulls, including my own had transoms built with a slight angle inwards and this effected a number of cockpit measurements much to the bemusement of chief measurer gordon barclay. At one point during measurement he exclaimed that the mast gate, thwart and case we’re all two inches too far forward. Mike Evans would step down as Treasurer/Membership and suggest the roles be divided in two. The NSCA membership stood at 971 with 171 new members but 191 electing not to renew. Cumbley wins the Spring Championship from Davis and Jon Clarke, (67 sailors) in the new Sailboats Speed 5.5 Rondar build which was a catchy product name… Andy Tunnicliffe powered his Boon/Impact Marine Solo to win the Nigel Pusinelli Trophy (37 entries) at WPNSA. David Walford and Phil Sturmer stepped up as Hon.Treasurer and Membership Secretary. Mike Sims beat 96 competitors to retain the Inland title from Ross Harvey and Andy Tunnicliffe. Multiple World Champion Ken Falcon sailed his Solo around the Isle of Wight on behalf of RYA Sailability, completing the 62 mile circumnavigation in 11 hours. Cumbley beat a fleet of 116 to win the Nation’s and National titles at hayling island, Tunnicliffe and Carveth completing the top three. Marleen Gaillard wins the ladies title and Callum gibb takes the under 21 title back to largo bay.
