2026 So, 70 years of history, many champions, hundreds if not thousands of solo sailors created, life long friends and memories made, and all because of one man and his vision to create a small single handed dinghy that could be made at home or by skilled builders. Easy to rig, easy to trail and blessed with a demeanour both steadfast but sporty. The people that built the association instilling fair but competitive one design racing, the small but significant addition of just plus or minus a few millimetres in the rules providing builders and owners With the ability to tweak hull shape and controls to suit their own weight, height and style. The perfect recipe for a class to thrive and providing suppliers with a target rich environment for development of hulls, foils, spars and hardware. I can close my eyes and be instantly transported back to that first summer day when my dad let me sail his solo 186 ‘free’, still smell the fresh varnish, feel the breeze on my cheek and hear the sound of the wavelets as the bow cut through the water. We all have fond recollections of races we have won and lost, remember the warm feeling of victory and the stomach wrenching cramp of failure but the undying feeling is of togetherness of a dinghy we love to race. If you put two solos together, one from yesteryear and one from today you will recognise them as one and that is down to the association of sailors who were entrusted to oversee jack’s vision and to ensure it will still flourish for at least another seven decades.
