“Well,” explained John, “it’s like this. For many years I gave way to drink. Our home was a poor sort of place. My Mary hadn’t a very nice life of it: But she bore it all like a saint, and never murmured. And in those days I had no clothes except those I stood up in. But last year I started going to church with tny Mary. And one night I was con verted. And my, the difference it made! Why, last night my Mary was upstairs, and I called out to her to bring my clothes down when she came. And what do you think she called back? She shouted, ‘Which?’ And oh, it made me feel good to hear my Mary ask me that! And I’ve been thanking the good Lord all day for that blessed word ‘which.’ ”—Mountains in the Mist, by F. W. Boreham.

tell the truth. He listened to God and obeyed Him. God has a plan for every life, better than anything we can plan. John helped thousands of people because he followed God’s plan for his life, and he was great in the sight of the Lord.

OBJECTS: A small “stop, look, and listen” sign, an empty whiskey bottle, and a black envelope, small enough to be pasted on the back of the bottle. (On a strip of black paper write with white ink the following words: “ Sin,” “ Sorrow,” “Poverty,” and “Sickness.” Fold the slip and place it in the envel ope. Draw a skull and crossbones on the envelope.) LESSON: Where is a sign such as this used? “At railroad crossings to help pre vent accidents.” That is a very good answer. This is a helpful sign and should be used in other places than at railroad crossings. Here is an empty whiskey bottle. I think that a “stop, look, and listen” sign should be placed before every whis key bottle while it still has whiskey in it. We will look back of the bottle and see whether we can find some rea sons for stopping, looking, and listen ing—and then not drinking whiskey. On the back of the bottle there is an envelope with a skull and crossbones, which means death. Whiskey means death to many things that are dearest and best in life. A black slip of paper is sticking out of the envelope. As we pull on it, we find words written on it. The first one is “ Sin.” Yes, whiskey does lead to sin. Next we find the word “Sorrow.” You can never have sin without sor row. It has been said of drinking, “It is champagne (sham pain) at night and real pain the next morning.” As I keep pulling on the slip, I read the .word “Poverty.” The Bible tells us that “ the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty” (Prov. 23:21). We next find the word “Sickness” written on the slip. Many people are sick today because of whiskey. I think we all agree that every whis key bottle should have a "stop, look, and listen” sign placed before it, for if people “really heeded the warning, they would not touch it.

MEMORY VERSE: “Thou shalt call his name John. . . . For he shall be great In the sight of the Lord” (Lk. 1:13, 15). APPROACH: Zacharias and his wife Elisabeth had a happy home because

God to Zacharias saying his prayer was heard, and his wife Elisabeth would have a son whom they must name John, and the Holy Spirit Would be in John to help him make people ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ b!YI 5 IOrt Because Zacharias thought this news was too good to be true, the angel said the sign of it would be that Zacharias could not speak until John was born. Everybody was happy when the baby came. The neighbors and cousins want ed him named Zacharias for his father, but Elisabeth called him John. 'Zach arias surprised them all, for as soon as he had written on a tablet, “His name is John,” he was able to speak again. Then Zacharias praised God, saying John would be the prophet of God, to go* before and tell people of the com ing One—the Lord Jesus—who would save them from their sins, give life to those in darkness, and guide our feet into the way of peace. It was a great honor to bring the good news that the Father’s own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, was coming from heaven to visit this earth. So John made himself ready to be God’s mes senger by being strong and brave to
