Hongkong Evacuation Affects Biola Missionaries After a difficult and dangerous-trip through war-tom China, Mrs. Charles A. Roberts (Grace Pike, ’21), wife of Charles A. Roberts, Superintendent of the Hunan Bible Institute, arrived in the Los Angeles Harbor with her three daughters, Janet, Jean, and Joyce, on the S. S. “President Coolidge” on August 3. While Mr. Roberts, in his position of- leadership in the China De partment of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, felt he must remain at his dangerous post in the heart of China, Mrs. Roberts came through the Japa nese lines to Hongkong to care for the welfare of the children. She and the three girls were evacuated from Hong kong in July. The other three Roberts chidren, Charles Jr., Faith, and Mir iam, were already in school in America. Friends of Biola are urged to pray for these, the school’s own missionaries, as they face a long separation, and to pray that Mr. Roberts may be protected as he carries on his service.

afar off. If we go crawling along the low levels, with our eyes upon the dust, then, of course, we cannot see the crown above.—Alexander Maclaren. 27. Abiding “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7). One may, and one ought to, live so near to Christ, the branch abiding in the Vine, so perfectly keep His com mandments and do His will, that he may ask whatsoever he will and it shall be done. This promise . . . does not apply absolutely to every object or every de sire of our hearts, but to that object or desire which is included within the scope of fruit-bearing in Christ Jesus. —James M. Gray. 28. The Glory of the Lamb “And he [Moses] said, I beseech thee, show me thy glory” (Ex. 33:18). In the wide world, speechless, and lonely, For me is no heart but Thine; Lord, since I must love Thee only, 0 reveal Thy heart to mine! ‘‘Wouldst thou know My glory, beloved? Know Me, the great I AM? First must thine eyes behold Me, The Slain and the stricken Lamb. “My visage so marred more than any, My form than the sons of men; Yet to the heart I have won Me, 1 am the fairest then. Thou knowest the sun by his glory— Thou knowest the rose by her breath, Thou knowest the fire by its glowing— Thou knowest My love by death.” —H. Suso. 29. The Way to Conquer “Let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord” (Psa. 95:6). We must kneel to conquer—kneel in prayer—kneel in utter dedication and surrender; and then we shall rise up men and women filled with all the full ness of God, to go out as terrible as an army with banners, to acclaim Him King of kings and Lord of lords, the one and only Saviour of the world, our King Christ Jesus, very God of very God! ' —Robert A. Laidlaw. 30. The Boot of Failure “We will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4). I have never had a case of spiritual failure to deal with, or spiritual trag edy to investigate, that did not begin in a neglect of Bible study and prayer for these' are things which always go together. I have never known a case of radiant spiritual development that was not rooted in
