HAGERSTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Section 2: Faculty Information and Responsibilities Faculty Classification System Full-time Faculty Full-time faculty are exempt employees. An exempt employee is an employee who is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and earns a fixed compensation in a predetermined amount that is paid each pay period regardless of the number of days or hours worked. Exempt employees are typically executives, directors, managers, professional and some technical staff, faculty, and others whose duties and responsibilities allow them to be exempt from overtime pay provisions defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) as amended, and any applicable state laws. Adjunct Faculty Adjunct faculty are temporary employees. A temporary employee is an employee who is hired for a specific period of time or for the completion of a specific project. The job assignment, work schedule, and duration of the position will be determined on an individual basis. Adjunct faculty are part-time, temporary employees who are hired on a semester basis to teach up to twelve (12) credits (credit or non-credit valued courses) per semester. No office hours are required. Adjunct faculty are compensated according to the number of credits (for credit courses), or hours (for non-credit courses) that they teach. Temporary Senior Lecturer (TSL) Temporary Senior Lecturers carry a 15-credit load each semester and have the responsibility for holding five office hours per week. They are temporary employees hired by the semester and frequently fill in for full-time faculty who are on leave from the College or for sudden and unforeseen enrollment boosts. The College may also utilize a TSL under the following conditions: • Uncertain program sustainability • Candidate does not fully meet the full-time faculty qualifications • Lower enrollments than necessary for full-time faculty Work Space Assignment Hagerstown Community College has established guidelines and procedures for the assignment of faculty and adjunct work spaces. New full-time faculty members will be assigned an office at the time of hire. Adjunct faculty typically are not assigned an office but may use the Fletcher Center adjunct common area for computer, phone, printing, copying, student consultation, breaks, locker space, mailboxes, and other functions. Any change to assigned offices must be approved in writing by the relevant area Director or Administrator, and is subject to the approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services. Faculty Duties and Responsibilities All faculty members are expected to be cognizant of their responsibilities toward teaching, mentoring new faculty, service to students, and College and community service. Below are the ten duties and responsibilities expected of all faculty members in all academic ranks.
