HAGERSTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Regarding credits and contact hours, a full load should be equal to 15 credit hours AND 225 contact hours (15 contact hours/week), and any fractional overload that is accrued should be paid in the semester that it is assigned. Exceptions within specific time frames may be made for new programs or other situations with approval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services. In order to preserve academic quality, the total assigned load of a full-time faculty member during the fall and spring semesters should not exceed 21 credit hours per semester, unless special or emergency circumstances call for a waiver of the limit by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services or designee. Overload (teaching more than 15 credits during a fall or spring semester) is contingent upon satisfactory student, evaluations and faculty observations, and completion of faculty duties. Faculty Workload All full-time faculty at HCC are expected to allocate their work hours in the following manner: Allocation of Work Hours per Week Work Hours to be Spent 75% Teaching and Learning 30 hours per week • Learner support activity (office hours and advising) • Class preparation • Student contact hours (15 hours) 15% College and Community Service 6 hours per week • Serving on committees • Recruiting students • Presentations to faculty 10% Professional Development 4 hours per week Total – 40 hours a week These hours represent a minimum workload and many faculty members will work more than 40 hours in an average work week to meet their responsibilities. Office Hours Full-time faculty must post and schedule a minimum of five regular office hours a week (three for faculty hired before July 1, 1996) with provisions for seeing students at other times. The schedule should be reported to the appropriate Division Director as well as the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services. Full-time faculty should be available for student consultation during final exam week. Since finals week has its own unique scheduling, faculty must arrange their office hours to deal adequately with students’ questions related to final exams. Faculty are expected to post their office hours for the convenience of the students.
