HAGERSTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Professional Development Plan. This meeting is required for faculty who are applying for promotion or tenure. Additional updates to Section 4 can be added as the semester progresses. As a goal is completed, the date is entered, as well as a short explanation of whether all the outcomes were achieved. Goals listed at the end of the year as not met must include an explanation of why the goal could not be accomplished. All full-time faculty are required to complete Sections 1-4 and 7 of the Faculty Annual Review and Professional Development Plan for the new fiscal and academic year no later than May 30. In Section 3 of the Faculty Annual Review and Professional Development Plan, Goals and Outcomes are matched with Faculty Responsibility as defined in Policy #5050 (FLPTC) in the Board of Trustees Policy Manual, available on the HCC Website at https://www.hagerstowncc.edu/docs/presidents-office/board-trustees-policy-manual. Professional development goals should be congruent with the Division’s goals and the College’s strategic plan. Any goal for which institutional financial support is expected must include a budget estimate. In Section 4, the rationale for each goal is presented. In Section 7, the faculty member signs the Plan and submits it to the Division Director for discussion and approval. After submitting the Professional Development Request Form (see Appendix A) for approval of the Division Director, faculty are notified of approval or disapproval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services, who monitors the budget allocated to professional development on an annual basis. For additional information related to professional development, including the application process, consult the HCC Employee Handbook . The HCC Employee Handbook can be found on the Human Resources webpage of the HCC website at https://www.hagerstowncc.edu/human- resources/employee-training. Sabbatical Leave Importance of Sabbaticals – Sabbatical leave is an important part of a comprehensive college professional development program for its faculty and administrators, which contributes to the scholarly growth and/or effectiveness of educators and administrators. Sabbatical leave may be for a half or full year. Approval of sabbatical leave proposals should be granted on the merits of the proposals and generally should not be denied for financial reasons, except in circumstances where the College is in a period of financial exigency. The College should strive to support all meritorious sabbatical proposals, which are to be funded from the annual professional development funds allocated for faculty and administrators. Assuming that annually one or more meritorious sabbatical proposals are submitted, the College should fund at least one proposal to clearly denote the importance of these unique development opportunities. Eligibility – An employee must be either a full-time tenured faculty member (any rank) or an administrator (generally at the director or dean level). Sabbatical leave should apply only to those employees who have served the College for six (6) or more years.
