Location The Retention and Registration office is located in the Student Center on campus, to the right of the main lobby. All students must be active with a current application on file and a photo ID in order to meet with a retention specialist. All prospective students who have not yet applied to HCC, may contact the Admissions office at 240-500-2238 to schedule an appointment. New Students New students who wish to register for classes must schedule an appointment with a retention specialist. Those who wish to come in on a walk-in basis, may do so on Mondays from 8:30am- 6:00pm. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to closing to ensure they are seen. Retention specialists will be available to assist students in navigating the processes and procedures involved in getting started in their first semester. These include, but are not limited to, choosing a major, selecting classes, understanding financial aid, and paying for classes. Current/Returning Students Current students who have chosen a major, with the exception of Pre-Nursing and Pre-Allied Health majors, will need to see their assigned faculty advisor for advising questions and class selection. Meeting with a faculty member in their discipline will enable students to learn valuable information and ask career specific questions. Students can locate their faculty advisor by selecting the Student Planning under Self-Service, and navigating through the Plan Your Degree/Register for Classes option. Scheduling Assistance Student who need help using Self-Service or have basic registration questions can see the Retention and Registration Assistants located at the front desk in the Retention and Registration Office. Career Advising Career advising is available to assist students who are undecided about their program of study. Staff can help undecided students make important educational and career decisions and learn how HCC can help facilitate their vocational goals. Additionally, students are encouraged to utilize HCC’s career interest/self-assessment tools and career exploration resources to facilitate personal growth and development in choosing a program of study available in the HCC Career Resource Guide at https://hagerstowncc.libguides.com/Career: • Traitify, a quick personality assessment designed to link answers to HCC degree/certificate programs. • FOCUS 2, an online resource which can also assist students with career decisions using a self-assessment and work-interest assessment that matches occupations/careers to HCC degree/certificate programs based on one’s interests, values, strengths, and preferences. • Candid Career, an online resource provides short professionally produced career advice videos by industry professionals which are designed to help students explore career options.
