Adult Education Programs Definitions Adult Secondary Education (ASE) – NEDP is a self-guided, competency-based, computerized high school diploma program for adults 19 years of age or older who have acquired academic and occupational skills through their life experiences. Students learn independently using the computer- based program, and work is reviewed through weekly one-to-one assessment appointments. Specific placement scores are required to participate in the program. This program is free and available to Maryland residents only. ASE – GED-level class is intended for students placing at grade levels 10-12. Classes are offered in Language Arts/Social Studies and in Math/Science as preparation for successful completion of the GED test. This class is free. ABE serves students placing at grade levels 4-9. Classes are offered in Language Arts/Social Studies and in Math/Science for improved literacy skills or as preparation for eventual completion of the GED test. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instructional assistance and practice exercises. This class is free. Family Literacy (FL) is provided to students with at least one child through age 16. In addition to the academic studies listed in the courses above, students will improve their knowledge with interactive literacy activities between parents and children, students will learn how to be the primary teacher for their children, and students will receive parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instructional assistance and practice exercises. This class is free and held at off-site locations. Integrated Education Training (IET)/Integrated English Language & Civics Education (IELCE) incorporates applied mathematics, reading and writing skills that are common to the workplace environment. In addition, the IELCE emphasizes English language acquisition skills and civics education that are also essential to the workplace. The curriculum is specifically designed to support the workforce training portion of the program. The academic support portion of this program is free, but students may be required to purchase books and materials. Funding for the career training portion may be available to eligible students. ESL Advanced is designed for students whose English proficiency allows them to meet most professional and social demands, carry conversations, and grasp deeper contexts in the language. Students will work on honing the verbal and written skills they already have, understanding somewhat more complex grammatical and implied concepts, and applying their skills to better themselves at home and in the workforce. It is a course designed for students who plan to continue their education with credit classes. It is also the final course offered in the ESL program for students pursuing any pathways other than credit college coursework. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instruction and practice exercises. The class is free, but students are required to purchase books and materials. ESL High Intermediate is a higher-level course for students whose English allows them to function in most day-to-day situations, yet they may have trouble understanding more
