Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instruction and practice exercises. The class is free, but students are required to purchase books and materials. ESL Low Intermediate is a mid-range class for students who are able to function with a limited routine English proficiency, yet are not able to communicate well outside familiar situations. The class includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Emphasis will be placed on sharpening skills in speaking phrases; writing messages; and interpreting written signs, maps, menus, etc. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instructional assistance and practice exercises. The class is free, but students are required to purchase books and materials. ESL Beginning is a course for students with limited functional ability in English, but who are able to comprehend letters and numbers, simple phrases, and basic vocabulary relative to their needs. The class includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Emphasis will be placed on improving basic skills, including recognizing simple conversation topics, responding to a range of common greetings and expressions, reading for specific information, and writing simple sentences. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Support Center for additional instruction and practice exercises. The class is free, but students are required to purchase books and materials. ESL Communication is a course for English language learners of all levels. This course develops listening and speaking skills and prepares students to function in educational, vocational and personal English-speaking contexts. Topics include phrases for discussion and conversation, pronunciation, and colloquial phrases as well as fluency and comfort with conversations in English. Students learn to cycle and recycle language as they work towards English fluency in a class that inspires natural language practice and growth in communication skills for all students. Articulation Agreements HCC maintains high school articulation agreements with schools in Franklin, Fulton, and Waynesboro Counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Washington County (MD) Public Schools. These allow students to receive college credit for specific advanced courses completed by students in their home high schools, such as advanced placement courses. Also, within Maryland, post-secondary articulation agreements exist between HCC and various institutions including Capitol College, Collegium Sanctorum Anglorum, Coppin State University, Frostburg State University, Hood College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Salisbury University, Towson University, University of Baltimore, University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of Maryland Global Campus, University of Maryland School of Medicine, and University of Maryland School of Nursing. Post-secondary articulation agreements also exist between HCC and out-of-state higher learning institutions such as Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, Purdue Global, Shenandoah University, Shepherd University, Shippensburg University, Southern New Hampshire University, United
