IEQ: Wellness & Its Effects On The Built Environment

Drew DePalma, Director of Operations, M&E Engineers Wellness has become a very trendy term lately, particularly in the corporate space. If implemented correctly, it can have a significant effect on employee retention and efficiency. A brief history of wellness and its crossover into the mainstream will be reviewed. There will be general overview of the WELL Building Standard, which is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and well being, through air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, mind, and community. Synergies between the WELL and LEED Rating systems will be discussed. WELL is similar to the Indoor Environmental Quality category of LEED, but goes a few steps further. In general LEED is more concerned with reducing energy, while some WELL initiatives will actually increase energy use. In addition, wellness in the built environment relies heavily on building operations. A case study of a recently WELL certified and LEED Platinum building will be provided. Dan Connors COO – Aris Energy Solutions Part 1 – An off-grid solar/wind powered streetlight that also powers auxiliary loads The presentation will focus on how the integration of energy efficiency, solar, wind, energy storage, controls and communications all work as a system to provide 100% renewable and resilient power, off-grid without trenching or wiring. Part 2 – “Fuel Cells…real solution for resilient and sustainabe power….or just hype?” Dan will provide a primer on how fuel cells work, the different types of fuel cell technologies, where they do and do not make sense, a short “state of the fuel cell industry” and why he is bullish on small modular fuel cells to serve the needs of many types of buildings. 2:30pm Resiliency Up and Carbon Emissions Down: Two New Energy Technologies To Power Buildings and Grounds
