The Woodland care home in Long Sault has two cases of COVID-19 confirmed. St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre in Cornwall is the latest addition to the list of outbreaks in the EOHU area. One staff member is now in self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19. The total number of COVID-19 cases for the Five Counties and City of Cornwall areas now total 132, including those at the long- term care homes. The majority of COVID-19 cases for the region are classed as “community transmis- sion,” which means direct contact between individuals.

Six more residents at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet have died due to complications from COVID-19. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief medical officer for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) confirmed the most recent deaths at the long-term care facility during his regular media teleconference. “This is a tragedy,” said Dr. Roumeliotis. “My heart goes out to the families and the others at the home.” The COVID-19 death toll for the EOHU region is now eight, and all of them at the Plantagenet nursing home. Doctors and nurses from the Hawkesbury & District General Hospital have gone to Pinecrest to aid staff there with infection control and other needs. “I am very worried about Pinecrest,” said Dr. Roumeliotis, noting that many of the nursing home’s elderly residents are frail and several suffer from various forms of dementia. “We are continuing to monitor the situation.” Details on the age and gender of the six

La tour d’eau de Wendover a besoin de quelques réparations cette année. «Nous ne voulons pas retarder un projet aussi important», a déclaré Luc Bédard, direc- teur général du canton d›Alfred-Plantagenet, au conseil lors de la téléconférence du 5 mai. L’inspection de la structure l’année der- nière a indiqué qu’environ 15 % du revête- ment extérieur avait besoin d’être refait et environ 10 % du mobilier et des fixations intérieures avaient besoin d›être réparés. Le problème était que l’une des deux sociétés d’origine chargées des travaux d›amélioration du tour d›eau avait déclaré faillite. L’autre société a accepté de faire les travaux de réparation à un cout réduit de 90 000 dollars. Une réinspection plus récente de la tour par l’Agence ontarienne des eaux a révélé qu’environ un quart de l’extérieur de

«La maison funéraire était une vocation pour moi, mais la situation actuelle attribuable à la COVID-19 a précipité mon départ.» Daniel Lafleur, propriétaire de la Maison funéraire et chapelle Lafleur, à Casselman et à Embrun, a décidé de prendre sa retraite comme directeur de services funéraires. Après 43 ans de carrière, M. Lafleur a vendu son entreprise, non sans regret, mais l’évolution de la pandémie de la COVID-19 a accéléré sa prise de décision. «J’ai pris cette décision parce que ce métier représente un grand risque pour ma santé», a déclaré celui qui est aussi le maire de la Municipalité de Casselman depuis quelques années. En effet, M. Lafleur explique qu’il y a quelques années, il a subi une transplan- tation du cœur. Le métier de directeur de services funéraires demande beaucoup d’engagement et de contacts auprès des personnes et des défunts, ce qui représente un risque pour sa santé. Dès sa jeunesse, Daniel Lafleur se passionne pour les maisons funéraires. Il se lance donc dans cette aventure en compagnie de son cousin, Phillippe Robert. Tous les deux deviendront les propriétaires d’une première maison funéraire dans la région. «Mes cousins et mon oncle étaient dans le métier. C’est une histoire de famille. Natu- rellement, j’ai suivi leurs traces», a expliqué M. Lafleur . Depuis 1974, Daniel Lafleur baigne dans ce métier, pour lequel il a développé un profond attachement. «Ce métier si parti- culier permet d’aider et d’épauler les gens en détresse dans un moment de tristesse absolue. On aide les personnes à passer à travers le deuil.» Une vocation avant tout Cependant, M. Lafleur a aussi exploré d’autres métiers. Ainsi, il a été restaura- teur pendant quelque temps. «Malgré les autres métiers, que j’ai exercés, j’ai toujours conservé un attachement particulier pour la maison funéraire», a-t-il fait valoir. C’est ce que j’ai toujours aimé dans ce métier.» Un maire à plein temps Ce départ à la retraite lui permet de se consacrer davantage à la politique. Il se dit prêt à consacrer son temps et son énergie encore davantage dans les affaires de la Municipalité et auprès des citoyens de Casselman. «Aujourd’hui je me consacre à 100% à la Municipalité de Casselman et je me consacre à 100% à ma femme», a-t-il lancé. Pour l’instant, rien ne présage une retraite de la politique. «Je ne peux pas me pronon- cer sur ce sujet. Les choses évoluent étape par étape. Cela dépendra de ma santé. Mais j’ai beaucoup de plaisir et de fierté à travailler avec l’équipe de la Municipalité. C’est une belle équipe.» Il a tenu à exprimer une grande reconnais- sance envers les gens auprès desquels il a œuvré. «Je tiens à remercier le personnel avec qui j’ai travaillé — les prêtres, les révérends et toutes les familles qui nous ont fait confiance. Aujourd’hui, il est temps de passer à autre chose, non sans regret, mais le travail municipal mérite tout mon temps et mes efforts», a-t-il lancé, en guise de conclusion.

Heroes Assemble! Griffiths is a member of the League of Ottawa Superheroes, a group of costume- play enthusiasts who enjoy dressing up as science fiction, fantasy, and superhero characters for conventions, special occa- sions, and Halloween. He and other League members also do special appearances by video and, where feasible, in person for story readings and birthday greetings for children. At home, Griffiths now has company on his weekend walks, with Angelik Bertram as Princess Elsa from the movie, Frozen, Lise Bertrand as the Magnificent Maleficent, and Yves Dostaler with his robotic buddy, Dude. They’ve even branched out for weekend forays to Wendover. “I love doing this,” said Griffiths. “It’s great to see people being happy. As long as this suit and me can handle it, I’ll keep on doing it.”
Grownups smile and children wave when Andrew Griffiths goes for a walk on the weekend around his neighbourhood in Rockland, and with good reason. It’s not every day that anyone sees Iron Man in person. “It’s been insanely popular,” Griffiths said, about his weekend walkabouts in character as one of the most popular superheroes in Marvel comics history. It’s not the first time that the 47-year-old senior analyst for the Bank of Canada has gotten in costume. Every Halloween for the past few years he’s greeted trick-or-treaters at the door as a pirate, a Wild West gunslin- ger, and as the Batman. “On our street, we average about 800 kids most years,” he said. “Even last year, with all that horrible rain, we still had about 400 kids.” But Griffith’s Iron Man alter ego is proving the most popular attraction of all, and is helping him do what every superhero tries to do: make the world better for others. At least, being Iron Man on the weekend is helping make children smile and forget that they are stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Origin story Griffiths did not wake up one morning and decide to become Iron Man. A nephew over in Nova Scotia went to visit around in costume in his town to help cheer up children stuck at home because of the pandemic. “It just kind of snowballed for him,” said Griffiths, and that decided the Rockland native to see if he could do the same for the children in his neighbourhood. But becoming Iron Man proved a bit of a challenge, at least when it came to getting “armoured up” like in the movies. A brand- new set of Iron Man replica body armour costs as much as $10,000, but after a little cyber-searching Griffiths found a used outfit for $1100. “Then I spent some time teaching myself all about the electronics so I could fix the ‘repulsors’ and other features.” When Griffiths suited up for the first time for a Saturday morning stroll around the neighbourhood, what his young fans saw was the Iron Man they watched in action with his fellow Avengers against Ultron, Thanos, and other supervillains. “It was complete shock and awe,” he said, smiling. “The kids just explode, jumping up and down and screaming, ‘Mom! Dad! Come see this!’”
