If you’ve worked with Megumi, you are a lucky person. It often feels like there is no problem she can’t solve. She is an accomplished physical therapist and teacher as well as a compassionate, empathetic person. When Megumi was 19, she needed to have brain surgery. The experience changed her perspective in life. She knew she wanted to do something that would involve working with and helping people. Six months later, her path became clear. She had moved to the United States from her native Japan and was taking language classes when she learned about physical therapy from her roommate, who was receiving it. Megumi was immediately interested and, after looking up more information, decided PT was the path for her. You might notice how many letters Megumi has after her name and the whopping number of continuing education classes she’s taken (as well as taught). As a nonnative English speaker, Megumi saw pursuing her education and continuing to learn as a way to prove herself. “To make sure I’m providing really good care to people, I tried to pursue a lot of training,” she says. “I love learning about different ways of approaching the body. If I can’t change something now, hopefully I am better able to next time.” For Megumi, seeing patients improve is the best part of her job. “I like problem-solving,” she says. But her work goes beyond just fixing something. “If I help my patient without giving them the tools to be independent, then they might have the same problem a few years later. I like giving patients tools so they can fix the whole problem, so they’re not depending on my care to get better.” When it comes to treating patients, Megumi approaches each person and situation as unique. “Several people may experience back pain, but it’s not the same for everyone,” she explains. “Every individual has very different presentations. I learn from each case in that way and change my treatment to adapt to the person. I learn a lot from my patients.”
Directions
1. In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic. 2. Brush vegetables with olive oil and place in a large bowl. Top with lemon juice and seasoning mixture. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes but no longer than 2 hours. 3. Prepare the grill at medium-high heat. 4. Grill vegetables in batches, cooking 3–5 minutes on each side until browned and tender. (Carrots will cook longer, 6–9 minutes per side.) 5. Remove from the grill, sprinkle with parsley, and serve hot.
