A MILWAUKEE SUMMER

Catching Up With My Kids and Extended Family

Summer is always one of my favorite times of the year. The sunshine gets a little brighter, the boats are puttering around the lake, and best of all, I get to spend a ton of time with my two sons as they come home to visit for the season.

But the best summer activity has to be when we’re able to head up to my brother’s lake home over in Eagle River along with a whole pack of extended family. We’ll take a long weekend just to get away from everything, spend a few hours fishing, and making sure that good campfire smell

Hopefully, a big chunk of my time this month will be spent golfing, losing to my kids out on the fairway. I consider myself a decent golfer, but to be honest, I don’t play enough to reach any semblance of greatness. My kids, though, both have a tendency to be at least serviceably good at any sport they set their mind to, and golf is no different. I’m not about to complain — I just love being out in the fresh, warm air, enjoying the friendly competition and cheering when my boys hit those perfect drives onto the green. Sports tend to be a general theme with us three. Whenever we can, we try to catch a Brewer’s game to root for the home team. We each get a brat and a beer and cheer them on as loudly as we can muster. Baseball, especially, just gives you a moment to kind of turn your brain off. It’s a couple hours to be away from the office, away from any responsibility, and enjoy each other’s company and get absorbed in the game.

permeates every article of clothing. S’mores are always on the menu, as well as any fish we manage to wrangle. Though much of my family is only about 45 minutes outside of Milwaukee, I don’t get to see them enough, so these reunions are always welcome.

Summer also provides a great opportunity to take long walks around the lakefront. I don’t do much water sports, but it’s relaxing to meander around and watch people water skiing or cruising around on their speedboat. Though we don’t have the longest summers in the country, Milwaukee’s a beautiful place when the sun’s out. I’m just grateful I get a chance to take a break and experience it with the rest of my family every now and then. Chris Milkie

TESTIMONIALS

KEEP YOUR HOUSE COOL AND YOUR WALLET HAPPY

Nothings says summer like cold ice cream, that inevitable sunburn, and the terrifying spike in your electric bill. As the temperature goes up outside, the thermostat goes down inside. Staying comfortable in your own home shouldn’t mean throwing your money on the fire. Here are a few things you can do around the house to enjoy the air conditioning and spare your wallet at the same time. Watch Those Windows Ensure your windows are completely sealed. Use caulk or weatherstripping to eliminate any air leaks to keep cool air in and hot air out. This will also help keep your house warm come winter.

“I have neuropathy in my feet and was in so much pain I could not sleep and had a difficult time working. I tried medication and acupuncture, which only helped a little with the pain. My treatments at Milwaukee Food & Ankle Specialists have left me pain-free between treatments.”

–Patricia D. (July 24, 2015)

“It was easy to make a convenient appointment. When I arrived, I was greeted in a very friendly manner. My visit proceeded promptly, and I was very satisfied with all that was done. I highly recommend these specialists to anyone!” –Timothy W. (Feb. 10, 2017) “I have enjoyed coming to your office. I was recently fitted for an orthotic insert, and everyone I have met has been friendly, informative, and helpful.”

Use blinds, drapes, or other coverings to block your windows and keep out hot sunlight.

If the weather permits, give your thermostat a break in the evenings by opening a few windows and letting the night air keep your house cooler while you sleep.

Factor In the Fans According to Energy.gov, when the ceiling fan is on, you can raise the thermostat by 4 degrees without sacrificing comfort.

Remember the fans in your bathroom, too. Switching those on after a hot shower removes the heat and humidity before it can escape into the rest of your house.

Attend to Your Appliances Keep unnecessary lights turned off. Energy.gov estimates only 10 to 15 percent of electricity consumed by incandescent lightbulbs becomes light. The rest is converted into heat.

–Karen K. (May 13, 2014)

Avoid using the oven on hot days. Stick with the stovetop, microwave, or outdoor grill to keep from adding more heat to your house.

Use the cold water setting on your washing machine when cleaning your clothes and line dry them if possible. The Consumer Energy Center calculates doing so can cut your energy bill by 4 percent. Someone is bound to get sunburned this summer. Using sunscreen can help prevent that, just like following these tips can help you avoid getting burned by your electric bill.

SWEATIN’ IN THE SUNSHINE Creative Workouts You Can Do Outside This Summer

As the summer sun begins to beat down, your excuses to avoid working out go up in smoke. Here are some ways to mix it up and get outdoors.

session — this will add a cardio-boosting element to your yoga practice and will increase blood flow, compounding the positive effects of every stretch.

Take advantage of hills. Today, instead of ramping up your treadmill, find a hill around your home. Ideally, you want the incline to be between a 6- and 8-percent grade. After a thorough warmup, do a series of all-out sprints up the length of the hill, recovering on your walk back down. Try the park bench press. Next time your daily jog leads you into the local park, find a sturdy park bench. The elevated nature of the bench makes it perfect for all sorts of body-weight exercises. The possibilities are endless. Try doing squats, double- and single-leg, using the bench as a support. Then, sit on the bench with your hands on either side of your hips. Slide your rear off the bench, supporting yourself with your hands, and do 12 to 15 dips, bending your elbows up and down. To get your cardio in, do a series of step-ups to the bench, followed by box jumps. Then you can continue your jog as a cool-down. In the sun, all yoga becomes hot yoga. Yoga is already excellent for increasing flexibility and strength, but add in the heat of the summer sun and it becomes even more effective. Set up your yoga mat anywhere the sun beats down and start your favorite yoga routine. Switch positions slightly faster than you would in a normal

The World’s Happiest Vacations

The Happiest States in the U.S. If we were to tell you that Hawaii is the happiest state in the country, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. And sure enough, Hawaii ranked first in overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long. Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature. The Happiest Country in the World Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category. This year, it relinquished the title to its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on earth, most notably its western fjords like the world-famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th- century waterfront. Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation. DESTINATION: HAPPY PEOPLE

Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local population that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious. Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals.
