Catching Up With My Kids and Extended Family

Summer is always one of my favorite times of the year. The sunshine gets a little brighter, the boats are puttering around the lake, and best of all, I get to spend a ton of time with my two sons as they come home to visit for the season.

But the best summer activity has to be when we’re able to head up to my brother’s lake home over in Eagle River along with a whole pack of extended family. We’ll take a long weekend just to get away from everything, spend a few hours fishing, and making sure that good campfire smell

Hopefully, a big chunk of my time this month will be spent golfing, losing to my kids out on the fairway. I consider myself a decent golfer, but to be honest, I don’t play enough to reach any semblance of greatness. My kids, though, both have a tendency to be at least serviceably good at any sport they set their mind to, and golf is no different. I’m not about to complain — I just love being out in the fresh, warm air, enjoying the friendly competition and cheering when my boys hit those perfect drives onto the green. Sports tend to be a general theme with us three. Whenever we can, we try to catch a Brewer’s game to root for the home team. We each get a brat and a beer and cheer them on as loudly as we can muster. Baseball, especially, just gives you a moment to kind of turn your brain off. It’s a couple hours to be away from the office, away from any responsibility, and enjoy each other’s company and get absorbed in the game.

permeates every article of clothing. S’mores are always on the menu, as well as any fish we manage to wrangle. Though much of my family is only about 45 minutes outside of Milwaukee, I don’t get to see them enough, so these reunions are always welcome.

Summer also provides a great opportunity to take long walks around the lakefront. I don’t do much water sports, but it’s relaxing to meander around and watch people water skiing or cruising around on their speedboat. Though we don’t have the longest summers in the country, Milwaukee’s a beautiful place when the sun’s out. I’m just grateful I get a chance to take a break and experience it with the rest of my family every now and then. Chris Milkie
