B13.02 Rooftop Gardens

Section Summary

Section Summary

Any community gardens, where provided, must be functional and meet the needs of the local community, maximise opportunities for social interaction between the residents and deliver health and wellbeing benefits such as local food production, social interaction, and exercise.

Podium/roof-top gardens (or green roofs) are to be functional and to have high quality design. The inclusion of podium/roof-top gardens is encouraged from both a community and sustainability perspective and should be incorporated where the budget permits.

Community Gardens Considerations Checklist:

Rooftop Gardens Considerations Checklist:

Ensure the site has been assessed for soil contamination to ensure community gardens are viable for the site. If soil contamination mitigation measures are required HCA require that the extent and likely cost of this is provided prior to proceeding. Community garden plots should be located to ensure garden beds receive sunlight for a minimum of six hours per day. All community gardens must have access to a convenient source of water suitable for watering garden beds. There must be passive surveillance of the community garden space. Community gardens must include adequate space for compost bins. Soil in community gardens must be suitable for growing food for consumption. The community garden must be accessible for maintenance and materials delivery. Ensure there is a lockable space provided to accommodate garden tools, equipment, and materials.

Any podium/roof-top gardens (or green roofs) that are intended to be accessed for the purposes of recreation and amenity use are to: (a) have a suitably deep layer of growing substrate to support a variety of plant types and provide a high level of amenity. (b) be readily accessible to the intended users. Any proposed podium/roof-top trees are to have a suitable growing substrate (including depth of soil) to support growth, health and the intended functional performance (including size, canopy and amenity) of the tree at maturity. Podium structures are to have a suitable load-bearing capacity to support the intended use, as well as the weight at maturity of plants and soil when saturated. Containers for planting are to be suitably waterproofed and drained, and to be watered by an irrigation system or as approved. Drainage systems must be suitable for the roof construction and catchment area. The Podium/roof-top gardens and green facade must be able to be readily maintained by the person and/or organisation responsible for maintenance. Any proposed roof top gardens shall be designed to minimise maintenance requirements.

B13.04 Irrigation

• • •

Refer to NDIS SDA Design Standard.

Consideration given to the provision of raised garden beds

Common landscaped areas shall be irrigated by a standard automatic watering system to ensure the vegetation can be established in its infancy and well maintained. Irrigation for landscaping is to be reticulated from water tanks. Tank size to be determined by engineer.

• • •

Provide lockable taps connected to rainwater retention tank. Ensure any pumps to water tanks are concealed from view.

Ensure all downpipes and fittings to tanks are in the same material finish i.e. all colourbond or galvanized steel, there should be no PVC to colourbond or galvanized steel.
