GREEN SEAL ™
Green Seal is a US-based independent non-profit organization founded in 1989 to identify and promote products and services that have less impact on human health, the environment and our natural resources. Green Seal certified products have met strict criteria for reduced toxicity, reduced packaging and required performance testing, as verified by a third-party review and a manufacturing site audit, as well as ongoing compliance monitoring. Green Seal’s mission is to use science-based programs to empower consumers, purchasers and companies to create a more sustainable world. Green Seal has 32 standards in over 375 product categories including Sanitary Paper Products (GS-1), Institutional Cleaners (GS-37), Institutional Floor Care Products (GS-40), Institutional Hand Cleaners (GS-41) and Institutional Specialty Cleaners (GS-53).
A professional in the cleaning industry can choose to utilize the Green Seal product certification standards to specify and source third-party certified products which have a more sustainable profile. Green Seal certified green cleaning products in the categories of institutional clean- ers and carpet care (GS-37), institutional floor care products (GS-40), institutional hand cleaners (GS-41), institutional specialty cleaners (GS-53) and sanitary paper products (GS-1) can help a facility reach its overall sustainability goals, and can potentially contribute to LEED O+M certification for the building or CIMS-GB certification for the cleaning service provider. BIOBASED
Biobased products are those which are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine and forestry materials. The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) BioPreferred ® Program recognizes biobased products in a variety of categories, including cleaning products. Biobased cleaning products help the country to reduce dependence on imported oil, are considered to be more helpful to the U.S. economy in general and the rural economy in particular, and are typically healthier for people and the environment than petroleum-based alternatives. The USDA has initiated a USDA Certified Biobased Product label to help identify and promote products which are made from biobased materials. The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (referred to as the 2002 Farm Bill), which was reauthorized and expanded by the Agricultural Act of 2014 (also referred to as the 2014
Farm Bill), requires federal agencies to purchase biobased products when reasonably available, reasonably priced, and comparable in performance. A professional in the cleaning industry can choose to utilize products with biobased ingredients in the categories of general-purpose cleaners, rest- room cleaners, carpet care, floor care, industrial cleaners and degreasers, hand soaps and hand sanitizers, and specialty cleaners (such as furniture cleaners, metal cleaners and graffiti removers) to help a facility reach its overall sustainability goals.
