THE HEART RIVER RANCH COW HERD No Nonsense and No Drama • We have been in the seedstock business for 31 years. • 99% of our breeding cows are home raised. – We know their history, their parent’s history, and their parents’ parents’ history. • SELECTION – Our selection process aligns with our primary customer, the commercial cattle producer. • We select for convenience traits such as foot and leg structure, mothering ability, disposition, udder conformation and quality. With labor availability being the weakest link in most operations, cows that function without extra intervention are more valuable to the operation. • We select for longevity, and we just don’t give it lip service but actually select bulls and cull cows based on their actual or potential longevity. Longevity has more economic impact on the bottom line of a cattle producer than any other trait. • The bulls in our 2026 sale dam’s Herdbuilder index is in the top 20% of the breed and Stay EPD is in the top 15% of the breed. • We weigh and condition score cows – which means the Heart River Ranch EPDs for Maitenance Energy and Dry Matter Intake are more accurate than herds that don’t weigh cows and condition score. • Our cows earn their place in the herd – if they don’t, they are gone. • We don’t tolerate any issues that we would not want you to deal with. • We do not retain open cows – for any reason. – Cows are not held over or given a second chance. • We don’t flush virgin heifers or unproven young cows. • Anything we flush or have flushed proved they earned the donor status. • The youngest donor cow we have ever flushed was 8 years old. • We flush cows that qualify to promote the maternal aspects of the Red Angus breed. • Our selection priorities are not focused on any traits that are antagonistic with the advancement of maternal genetics.
