A Father’s Day to Remember Cherishing Family Time More Than Ever
After celebrating Mother’s Day in our last newsletter, it’s time for me to appreciate Father’s Day as it rolls around this year. This time, it seems to be taking on a deeper resonance for me than before. It’s funny how life teaches you to appreciate the moments you once took for granted, especially family time. With my boys, Nathan and Zach, growing up and venturing out on their paths, those rare moments we all gather under one roof are increasingly cherished. Remembering when drives to Nathan’s hockey practices were our exclusive father-son moments it’s a stark reminder of how quickly things change. Now, Nathan’s got his driver’s license. Then, there were the times Zach would go golfing with me, even if it wasn’t his favorite thing. Now, he’s off to college. In hindsight, the simplicity of those drives and those days on the golf course take on a golden hue. Fortunately, Zach returned home from college in May for the summer, so we’ll have three full months with him. Perhaps I can coax him into weekly golf outings with me. It’s nice having him back since we especially missed him during our spring break vacation this year. His absence was a poignant reminder of how much each family member’s presence completes our home. Even in the Caribbean sunshine, there was a Zach- shaped void that couldn’t be filled! Now, for this Father’s Day, there’s nothing grand planned; frankly, that’s perfectly fine by me. As cheesy as it may sound, being together is celebration enough. Traditionally, I take my dad out for a round of golf. Not on Father’s Day — the courses are too packed — but the day before. It’s become our little tradition, a quiet way to connect and enjoy each other’s company. As for the actual day, a family BBQ
at my dad’s house is on the cards. I look forward to dragging Zach and Nathan to Top Golf or the driving range beforehand.
The morning of Father’s Day will be a special one, where I get
to sit with my sons over breakfast and, for once, have their undivided attention. When they were younger, their mom orchestrated the creation of handmade cards and gifts, which I’ve kept stored in my bedside drawer ever since. Each is a tangible piece of their childhood and a testament to those precious, fleeting moments. Now, they know the fastest shortcut to my heart is through chocolate — any kind, except maybe that 98% cacao. That’s just too bitter for my taste. This Father’s Day is more than just a celebration; it’s a reminder of the ever-changing dynamics of family life as time goes on. So, I’ll do my best to embrace these moments together, knowing they’re shaping the memories we’ll all carry forward. At the clinic, I often preach the value of taking things one step at a time during their recovery. I’m taking that philosophy to heart this Father’s Day, being mindful of each moment with my family and acknowledging the joy of being together. So, here’s to a Father’s Day filled with laughter and perhaps a few swings on the golf course. It’s a day to honor the journey of fatherhood, recognize our role in our children’s lives, and appreciate the irreplaceable value of family time. Here’s to making every moment count. –Mike Ulmer

Many health-conscious consumers like eating more salads but hate the time needed to prepare them. A registered dietitian offers this realistic nutrition tip: Understand and accept your limitations in preparing salad at home and find a kitchen gadget to close the gap. Instead of taking time to chop salad ingredients individually, add your veggies to a vegetable chopper that slices or dices each item and drops it into a plastic container, says Kylie Sakaida, a nutrition expert with a significant
following on TikTok. A veggie chopper is a large plastic box with a cutting lid. Built-in blades on the lid slice or dice ingredients and drop them into the box for storage. Just make your entire salad in here,” says Sakaida, who has used her veggie chopper for over two years. “After
