D O you know that the world is shrink ing in size? And do you realize that persecution is raging? Today one-third of earth’s population is dominated by Communism. Countries like Russia and her satellites are now behind the Iron Curtain. Others are cut off by the Bam boo Curtain, and still others by the Pur ple Curtain. All these are inaccessible. I am thinking now of the many coun tries in Europe in which I once preached the gospel to multiplied thousands, and through which I once travelled freely, most of them inaccessible. No one can get into them, let alone preach. In China there were once 6,000 missionaries. To day, with the exception of those im prisoned or murdered, they are all out. One was tortured until he lost his mind and committed suicide. More Christians have suffered for Christ in this generation than ever before in the history of the world. In country after country they have been arrested beaten, tortured, and martyred for their faith. Once it was comparatively safe for missionaries to work in almost any country. Today it is most dangerous. The Nationalist Government of China tells us that 36 million have perished in that country since Communism took over, and that of that number 16 million have been murdered. Not all of them were Christians, but many were. Some 20 million, state the United Na tions, are in concentration camps behind the Iron Curtain, and they are doomed to a slavery worse than death. Two-thirds of earth’s population, they tell us, are sick, hungry and illiterate. No less than 278,000 in China have now signed the Communistic Manifesto, all of them pro fessing Christians and many of them leaders in the church. Such is the power of demon-inspired Communism. But in spite of all this there are still many open doors. There are tribes still accessible waiting to be evangelized, and the job must some day be completed. Why not in our generation? These open doors may not remain open long. Today they challenge young men and women. But we must turn from the policy of replacement to that of pioneering. For decades the Church has concen trated on the same localities instead of pressing on into the darkness beyond. Trail-blazers are still needed. Pioneers must answer the call. What an oppor tunity! What a privilege! It is God’s program that is at stake. Are we going to fail Him?

HYMNS OF THE LIVING FAITH

LINCOLN ’ S FA ITH Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday we celebrate this month, made this declara tion of faith during his presidency: “ I believe in God, the Almighty Ruler of Nations, our good and merciful Mak er, our Father in Heaven, who notes the fall of a sparrow and numbers the hairs of our heads, I believe in His eternal truth and justice. “ I recognize the sublime truth an nounced in the Holy Scripture and proven by all history that those na tions only are blest whose God is the Lord. “ I believe that it is the duty of na tions as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to include the influence of His Holy Spirit to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repent ance will lead to mercy and pardon. “ I believe that the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Saviour of the world is communicated to us through this book. “ I believe that the will of God pre vails. Without Him all human reliance is vain. Without the assistance of that Divine Being I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. “ Being a humble instrument in the hands of our heavenly Father, I de sire that all my works and acts may be according to His will; and that it may be so, I give thanks to the Almighty, and seek His aid.”
