sent the remnant of Israel after the Church has been taken. The five wise virgins are the believing remnant, the foolish virgins the unbelieving, who only profess to be looking for Messiah’s com ing in power. While the bridegroom tar ries, all the virgins slumbered and slept. But when at last the bridegroom came he found only the wise virgins ready to go with him to the marriage. In view of the context and the Jewish character of the book of Matthew, the writer is inclined to the second of the above views. However, he sees a definite parallel in the church today. Even as the remnant shall slumber and sleep before the Lord’s coming in power, so the church today sleeps while the Lord tarries. We need to watch, therefore, and wait for we know not when our Lord will come for His bride. All Ten Virgins had Lamps vv. 1-4 Lamps stand for Christian profession. Note that the foolish as well as the wise virgins had lamps. The latter stand for that which is merely outward having no inward possession. These picture the con stituency of Christendom today. Many make a profession of Christianity who do not possess the inward reality. Many belong to the Church who have no expe rience of the new birth, no conscious presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Jesus said, “ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 7:21). The parable shows that only those who had oil in their lamps partook of the marriage feast. So it is today, unless individuals have the Spirit of God dwell ing in their hearts they will not he pre pared to meet the Lord when He comes. Not all the Virgins Were Ready vv. 5-10 The parable is in harmony with the marriage customs prevailing at that time. On the night of the wedding the bride groom came to the house of the bride, announced his presence, and then led her with pomp and gladness to his own home attended by the bride’s youthful com panions. In all probability the ten vir gins of the parable were young women who had part in the procession to the bridegroom’s house and who were to have part in the marriage supper. When the time came to join the pro cession some of the virgins did not have any oil in their lamps, thus were not ready to have part in the gala festivities. How tragic to think that in the hour of Christ’s coming there will be some ap parently good folk who will be found with no oil of saving grace in their hearts! But God’s Word indicates that so it will be. The Foolish Virgins Found A Closed Door w . 11-13 The story here needs no exposition. In view of the coming of the Lord, let us be diligent to make our calling and elec tion sure. “Watch, therefore!” T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S

Memory Selection: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as unto the Lord and not unto men” (Col. 3:23). Those who were the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ were constantly trying to ask Him questions that He could not answer or to cause Him to say something that would not honor His Father in heaven. One day a Pharisee asked the Saviour what was the greatest command ment of the Old Testament law. The Son of God told the man that there were two great commandments which were the most important, for neither one of them could be obeyed unless the other was obeyed also. The first was, “ Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” These wicked people were call ing themselves friends of God, but they were not serving Him with any love for Him in their hearts. They were selfish and proud; they refused to believe that the Lord Jesus was the Son of God. They spent much time telling others what God wanted them to do, but they refused to obey God themselves. Their lips honored Him, but their lives were far from pleas ing in His sight. They tried to attract attention to themselves and to get the best of everything for themselves. The second great commandment that the Lord Jesus told the Pharisee was, “ Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self.” Only as we truly love God by ac cepting His Son, the Lord Jesus, as our Saviour, can we truly love others as we love ourselves. Our human hearts will not be willing to love others in this way. Only the Lord Jesus can give to us this kind of love. Those who help another or who give money to the poor without any love for them are not honoring God. God looks at the reason for the gift, or for the action more than the gift or the action themselves! His Word tells us, “ And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men.” When we do everything for God and for others because of love, we shall be obeying God by serving Him as He has commanded.

Mar. 8, 1953 LIVING ON THE ALERT Matt. 25:1-13 Pointers on the Lesson

Tremendous spiritual lessons are to be learned from the parable of the ten virgins. This is so whichever of the two main interpretations is adopted as the correct one. One interpretation is to the effect that the Kingdom of the heavens in the parable means professing Chris tianity in the Church age, that the five wise virgins are believers, that the five foolish virgins are professing Christians, and that the coming of the bridegroom is the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for His saints when the Rapture of the Church takes place. The other main inter pretation is that the ten virgins repre
