HOUSTON BALLET Houston Ballet is America’s fifth largest ballet company, with an ensemble of 59 dancers and a wide-ranging repertory that celebrates both the classics and today’s leading choreographers. Under the direction of Stanton Welch AM since 2003, the company has been revitalized through bold new commissions, acclaimed full-length narrative works, and a focus on developing new artistic voices. The company’s repertory includes works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Sir Frederick Ashton, and contemporary choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, and Alexander Ekman. A highlight of the touring repertory is Welch’s Sons de L’âme (“Sounds of the
Soul”), created for the company’s Paris debut in 2013. Set to solo piano music by Frédéric Chopin and performed live by world-renowned pianist Lang Lang, the ballet received a standing ovation at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Since then, it has been presented at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, and toured to Tokyo and Nagoya in July 2025. Sons de L’âme exemplifies Houston Ballet’s commitment to blending classical technique with contemporary artistry, offering audiences a poignant exploration of music and movement.
