• New Philadelphia National Historic Site has been established as a national park to commemorate the history of early 19th century pioneers in Illinois (Dec 2022) • Founded in 1836 as an integrated community by Frank McWorter, who purchased his own freedom • First U.S. town founded and registered by an African American • The New Philadelphia site and Frank’s grave are listed on the National Register of Historic Places • In 2013, the site was included in the National Park Service National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program, in which visitors receive a stamp • Artifacts, signage, and an augmented reality walking tour are open to the public / FREE
