The Happy Tooth

THE FAMILY WE FIND CELEBRATING THE MANY SISTERS IN MY LIFE

There is a lot to celebrate around the office during the month of July, and I don’t just mean the Fourth of July. My sister, Dr. Janice, celebrates her birthday at the end of the month, and so does the office manager of our San Diego location, Goli Godarzi, whom I am lucky enough to consider my adopted sister. In addition to their birthday celebrations, we’ll also be throwing a big office baby shower for two team members who are both expecting.

“I want the women in my life to feel supported as they enter new chapters of their lives.”

make in order to do right by their kids, so the least I can do is throw a party for them! I want the women in my life to feel supported as they enter new chapters of their lives. The team at our office is truly one of a kind. I’ve never worked in a place where my team felt

Bernice, one of our dental hygienists, is having her first baby, a little girl due at the beginning of September. A few months later, in November, our scheduling coordinator, Joanna, will be welcoming her second child into the world. As you might expect, it’s a bit hectic having two crucial members of our team with babies on the way, but we couldn’t be more excited for them. Bernice and Joanna will both be out for a few months after delivery, but we’re planning ahead to ensure we’re able to manage without them for a while. Other staff members are training to cover for them so they can take the time off that they need to have a baby, recover, and come back to work when they’re ready. Four years ago, I threw a baby shower for Janice, and I learned that they are more fun than I thought. I didn’t realize there were so many baby shower games to play! For Bernice and Joanna, we’re going to take advantage of the nice San Diego weather to hang out and play some games. I have also arranged to have food catered and for a professional photographer to be there taking lots of pictures. Our last big office party was our Christmas party back in December. The Casino Royale made for a fun event, but this group always has fun together. I’m happy to have another reason for us hang out outside of work. It is a special thing to work with people I feel so close to. I don’t have kids, so I really admire these women. When they have kids, they start to put their child’s needs over their own wants. That’s a huge sacrifice to

like an extension of my family. We have a lot of fun together, we work hard to take care of our patients, and we’re always ready to celebrate

each other’s triumphs and offer support. This month, I’m reminded of all the wonderful things we have to celebrate, and I’m excited for what the future will bring.

HowMuch Sunshine Is Too Much?

sun, it offers poor defense against the heat. So, if you opt for cooler attire, it’s important to cover all exposed skin with a copious amount of sunscreen. Be sure to reapply every two hours for maximum skin protection. Spend Less Time in the Sun If you’re planning to spend a significant amount of time in the sun, consider your environment. Will there be plenty of shade? Will you have to bring your own? What’s the best way to step out of the sun for a few minutes? Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing are great ways to shield yourself from UV rays, but it’s important to avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods. Taking a break from the sun gives your body the time it needs to recuperate and helps prevent sunburn and heatstroke. Common Myths About Sun Exposure Many people think that a tan is better than a sunburn, but the result of tanning is still sun damage. When your skin tone changes due to the sun, regardless of whether it tans or turns red, it’s a result of the epidermis reacting to damage caused by UV rays. Both are symptoms of harmed skin. While vitamin D is important, the sun does not contribute to its creation as much as you might think. Doris Day, a New York City dermatologist, explains that if your skin were to constantly produce vitamin D from being in the sun, it would reach toxic levels. Vitamin D is the only vitamin that your body can produce on its own, through a common form of cholesterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. Spending time in the sun does help vitamin D form, but you need far less exposure than you think. We want to thank all of our patients who put so much faith in us by recommending our services to their friends and family members. Last month, our referrals came from these amazing patients: A+ Referrals Knowing how to protect yourself from UV rays is the first step to having a safe, fun-filled summer!

Keep Your Family Safe

To many people, summer is all about heading outside to enjoy the weather. But getting too much sun can be dangerous. To have a fun-filled summer with your family this year, remember that it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Cover Up Covering your skin is one of the best ways to avoid skin damage. Wide- brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants or skirts can protect your skin from direct exposure to UV rays. While this tactic protects you from the

“I’m a Navy vet who has had his share of abrasive dentists. Even since having gotten out, I’ve had less-than-pleasant experiences with civilian dentists. I loathe going to the dentist and have missed out on years of follow-ups for that reason. “What can I say that hasn’t already been said about this place, aside from the critics who want to put a price tag on one’s health? (Health care/dentistry is expensive, period!) The moment I walked in the door yesterday, I was not only welcomed with a smile but offered a handshake from the front desk. Who does that anymore?! “As the initial exam took its course, each and every person who worked with me greeted me, gave their name, and explained what they were about to do. Once the evaluation was done, every issue was broken down in plain but never condescending terms. “At 48 years old, I found myself having severe anxiety about getting my root canal done today. My stomach was in knots. However, I left today with a smile — granted, a crooked one from being numb. But it was unlike any dental experience I’ve ever had. I actually look forward to going back for routine checkups.” -Todd H. TESTIMONIALS See What Others Are Saying

FIND WHAT’S BEEN LOST Are Dental Implants the Secret to Anti-aging?

People are always looking for ways to turn back the clock, especially when it comes to their appearance. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that in 2016, Americans spent over $16 billion on plastic surgery. This a big price tag, and the worst part is, a lot of patients were disappointed in the results. Every year, people go to countless plastic surgeons or spend hundreds of dollars on cosmetics, but they are never able to recapture the youthful appearance they once had. This is because, more often than not, your skin isn’t the problem; it’s your teeth adding years to your face. Or, more accurately, a lack of teeth. The American College of Prosthodontists estimated 178 million adult Americans are missing at least one tooth. While tooth loss is a common problem,

don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s not a big deal. Losing a single tooth can be a catalyst for a variety of health woes. When a tooth falls out, the surrounding teeth and gums become vulnerable to cavities and gum disease, problems that can easily spread to the rest of your mouth. Many patients who lose a tooth will see their remaining teeth shift, crowding in to fill the open space. Your jaw can also suffer. Without stimulation from your teeth, your jaw bone begins to deteriorate. The more teeth you are missing, the weaker your jaw becomes. Missing teeth become obvious even if your mouth is closed. Without the support from your jaw, your facial features sink inward, giving you a hollowed-out appearance not unlike a jack-o’- lantern the week after Halloween.

The best way to prevent the damage caused by missing teeth is to practice good oral hygiene and keep your teeth for your entire life. But accidents happen, and if you find yourself with a gap in your teeth, consider the lasting benefits of dental implants. With implants, dentists can prevent the damage caused by a lost tooth, filling the gap with a stable, natural-looking replacement. Most people can’t tell an implant from the real deal! And with a replacement tooth, your jaw bone and facial structure are preserved. Call 619-831-8832 (San Diego) or 858-842-5850 (Poway) and learn how implants can help you smile with confidence while protecting your oral health and pushing back the hands of time.

Secret Swimming Holes of the World EXCLUSIVE SPOTS YOU MUST SEE TO BELIEVE

Summertime is for swimming, but why settle for a community pool when you can have access to the most beautiful swimming locales in the world? These three exclusive, little-known spots are sure to take your breath away. Hali’i Falls, Hawaii With its spiral staircase of waterfalls, this remote jungle location offers up more than one unique spot to take a plunge. Visitors never fail to be awestruck by the deep blue-green hue of each pool created by the four cascading waterfalls. Hali’i means “to spread out,” which is precisely what each waterfall does, showcasing a serene experience unlike any other. But the beauty of this one-of-a-kind experience is only outdone by its exclusivity. To reach these pools, you’ll have to hike through dense forest, deep marshes, and wide-open pastures of sugar cane. Dos Ojos, Mexico The Spanish translation of the name for this magical system of caves is “two eyes,” and you’ll want to have yours checked after

you see this swimming hole. When limestone bedrock collapses, a sinkhole called a “cenote” is formed. The unearthed water from the natural aquifer balances a color palette of earth tones with the most majestic shades of blue you’ll ever behold. The calling cards for these bodies of water are the Blue Eye and the Black Eye. Both offer unforgettable experiences, but the price of entry is a hefty sense of adventure. You’ll need a full set of scuba gear to get to either hole. The Baths, Virgin Gorda A day in the Caribbean is like living every moment inside a beautiful pastel painting. The elegance of this location in the British Virgin Islands will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a cathedral. The large boulders and natural rock formations create shallow caves that will captivate your eyes as you wade through the water in wonder. When you exit, you’ll witness the sight that gives this beautiful spot its name: A handful of 40-foot granite boulders form private pools as if that was what they were made for.
