A HOME FOR CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART
A BEACON FOR CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART Africa’s stories are bold and complex, beautiful and insightful, challenging and serene - and the walls of The Silo capture these narratives through visual journeys that are immersive and profound. At The Vault, the hotel’s dedicated exhibition space, works by regional artists bring these stories to life. Zimbabwean artist Wilfrid Timire’s “Grain of the Past, Seeds of the Future” paid tribute to Harare’s street life using recycled sackcloth. More recently, Gabrielle Kruger’s “Blurred Lines” demonstrated an innovative painting technique where materials are reused and given a new beginning on canvas. The Vault has included a variety of very talented contemporary artists in their programme, such as Zander Blom, Jody Paulsen and Kate Gottgens – all artists that I admire and look up to. The industrial and below-ground space is intimate and inviting.” “ GABRIELLE KRUGER, CAPE TOWN-BASED ARTIST
UNIQUE AND ORIGINAL NARRATIVES The Royal Portfolio has always valued art and local creativity, as is evident at all of our properties but due to its location above the Zeitz MOCAA, The Silo Hotel presented a unique opportunity to surround travellers in the world of contemporary African art, making it part of the guest experience. At The Silo, there is an invitation to explore African creativity around every corner – in public spaces and in the elegant suites - the carefully curated collection features diverse artists across mediums and messages that challenge and inspire. The reception area features Frances Goodman’s striking “Blue Velvet” and “Hooded Lady I, II & III” series, whilst Jody Paulsen’s colourful works “Must be the Rain” and “So Exotic” share the walls with Mohau Modisakeng’s thoughtful “Ditaola” collection. A compelling mixed media piece by Kudzanai Chiurai gives anyone who walks by a reason to stop and contemplate, Athi Patra Ruga’s vibrant piece adds a strong sense of place, and among these works, Cyrus Kabiru’s “C-Stunner” series captivates with its elaborate handcrafted eyewear and striking self-portrait photographs. At Granary Café and Willaston Bar, visitors will discover notable works by artists including Pierre Carl Vermeulen, Georgina Gratrix, and Kudzinai Chiurai. The guest library also displays Pieter Hugo’s “Hyena and Other Men” photographic series. Heading to the rooftop area, one of Wilfred Timire’s works “The Game Players” takes pride of place where guests can enjoy the beautiful harbour views and lose themselves in the energy of the continent’s creativity.
