AT ONE WITH THE OCEAN
The ocean holds a mirror to our humanity. In its story we find both our wildness and our responsibility. To protect marine life is to honour ourselves.”

SHARING THE PLIGHT OF OUR OCEANS In Hermanus, conservation thrives as both community commitment and visitor experience, creating meaningful connections between people and marine life, and at Birkenhead House we ensure our guests have access to encounters that create lasting awareness - inspiring them to share the message of marine conservation after witnessing the ocean’s magnificent wildlife firsthand.
THE HEARTBEAT OF CONSERVATION Connecting with nature is effortless in Hermanus – the ocean forms both the backdrop and centrepiece of every experience. While the arrival of whales during the winter months is always a highlight, the town remains a passionate marine conservation destination throughout the year. The Cape Whale Coast offers opportunities to not only witness marine life but also to participate in experiences that build deeper understanding and appreciation of the incredible biodiversity of this unique marine ecosystem. MARITIME MOMENTS TO REMEMBER As part of the town’s evolving conservation story, there’s much excitement about the South African Whale Centre (SAWC), which is destined to become a global hub for innovative marine conservation and education. This state-of-the-art facility will replace the current
Whale House Museum, integrating scientific research, immersive experiences and cutting-edge technology to inspire and educate.
For those seeking first-hand experiences, boat-based whale watching provides a chance to observe southern right whales in their element. Purpose-built catamarans operated by experienced crews navigate the waters of Walker Bay, meaning that visitors can witness these gentle giants at close proximity. Additional sightings of playful Cape fur seals, dolphins and African penguins are an added bonus. The region’s unique shark population has also become central to conservation efforts. The South African Shark Conservancy , a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to protecting sharks, conducts research on behaviour and ecology from its laboratory in Hermanus. This research seeks to better understand sharks’ crucial role in marine ecosystems. Visitors can participate in weekday tours.
