A FAMILY LEGACY BEGINS The Royal Portfolio’s story began in 1999 when Liz and Phil Biden transformed their beloved family holiday home into Royal Malewane , set deep in South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park. “We were lucky to have a beautiful retreat in the African bush,” Phil recalls. “It was a place of unforgettable moments - sunsets, laughter, time together. Liz wanted to share that magic. But once we started, we couldn’t stop. Liz had a gift for hospitality, and soon, we wanted to create even more extraordinary South African experiences for our guests, our friends, and our growing family.” FROM A DREAM TO A PORTFOLIO That passion led to the opening of Birkenhead House in Hermanus, offering barefoot luxury on the edge of the ocean. Next came La Residence in Franschhoek, nestled among vineyards and mountains, a haven of opulence and tranquility. The Silo Hotel was a game changer, redefining urban cool through art and architecture at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. Liz’s flair for design and instinct for creating inviting spaces became the signature for every property.
