They show the excruciating brutality and high drama of Ali-Frazier III in vivid detail. “To my knowledge,” Pestana says, “the photographs have not been previously published in print and have been largely unseen for 50 years.” “I’ve tried to approach this with the mindset of a steward,” Pestana continues. “I never met Riley. I tried to track him down without success. From the research I’ve done, I think he was born in 1937 and most likely died within the past few years, but I don’t know that for sure. My goal has been to preserve and document the archive, make the photographs accessible for editorial and research use, and also make a small number of archival pigment prints as part of the preservation and presentation of the material. I want to respect the material, honor Riley’s legacy and do things in a way that adds something to the historical record of the fight.” The Ring is proud to present some of Lowell Riley’s images on the accompanying pages.
