FINISHING SHOTS By Tom Gray

UNDISPUTED TRUTH: On September 26, 1972, Bob Foster made the 11th defense of his lineal light heavyweight championship against heavy-handed southpaw Chris Finnegan at the Empire Pool (later the Wembley Arena) in London. Their brutal, high-contact battle was competitive through nine rounds before Foster put the Englishman down with a sharp one-two in the 10th. The champion kept that potent weapon in his holster until Round 14, when he released it again to devastating effect. The courageous Finnegan, who was Olympic middleweight champ in 1968, was counted out at 0:55 of the penultimate round. The bout was later named The Ring Fight of the Year.
