Some of Life’s Most Important Lessons Are Taught When We Least Expect Them

We’ve all had that one experience growing up that we’ll never forget — an unexpected or seemingly inconsequential moment that sticks with us because it taught us something valuable. These important lessons can come from anyone and anywhere, which is why I asked a few members of our team to share some of their own. Our hygienist Rachel Delgado knew exactly which story to tell. “I was 12 years old and playing in the garage when I knocked a can of purple paint onto the floor. It burst open and spilled everywhere, but instead of telling my dad, I tried to clean it up myself. I used a hose to spray the paint, but instead of washing away, it spread into a bigger and bigger mess. The more I tried to clean it, the worse it got. When my dad finally walked in, he was not happy. He explained that water doesn’t work on lead-based paint, and if I had just come to him from the beginning, it would have been easy to clean. Every time I saw that giant purple paint stain, I was reminded to always be honest about my mistakes and never be afraid to ask for help.” Deana Myer, our office manager, has learned to never take her loved ones for granted. “After my father passed away, I learned how important it is to let your loved ones know how much they mean to you. His death was incredibly difficult for me, but it taught me to always let people know how loved they are. My family calls me the Hallmark Lady because I never let a day go by without a text or a call that lets them know I love them and they’re on my mind.” Our patient coordinator Marisol Mendoza learned about trust from her days on the cheerleading squad. “You often learn about the true meaning of teamwork when you start working as a professional, but my understanding began with cheerleading in high school. I was the flyer on our team— that’s the one that gets tossed into the air. I had no choice but to trust my teammates to catch me on my way back down. Things go much smoother when everyone is accountable for their own role, but that can only happen when everyone can be trusted.” My wife, Robin, experienced her own profound moment in the oddest of places. “I’ll never forget when my brother and I were young, our parents took us out to eat at a Piccadilly buffet in Texas. Our father told us we could have anything we wanted but to remember we could always go back for more, and the rule was that we had to finish anything we put on our plate. Everything's bigger in Texas, including the food, so of course, I filled my plate with way too much. I couldn’t finish it, and I felt so guilty. That moment taught me that moderation is a good thing and to never be wasteful.”

My own memorable life lesson happened in first grade. I was struggling in school and no one could figure out why because outside the classroom, I was considered a pretty bright kid. But as a first-grader, it can be hard to figure out how to express the things you need, and it wasn’t until I went to the eye doctor and discovered that I needed glasses that things got better. It turned out that I just couldn’t see the board very well! I learned that you can’t be successful if you don’t seek out the tools you need to make success happen. We all have lessons to learn nearly every single day. The pandemic we’re going through has become fast proof of that. So, remember to stay open- minded and always look for opportunities to improve. You never know what you might discover. –Dr. David Yates

ALL ABOUT COLLAGEN

Even if you have heard of collagen, chances are you don’t know much about what it does for the human body. Collagen makes up a third of the body’s proteins. In some ways, it is the glue that holds our bodies together (the first part of “collagen” comes from the Greek word “ kolla ,” meaning “glue”). Getting your body to produce more collagen can have amazing health benefits, particularly for those who are aging and noticing more wrinkles. There are around 16 types of collagen proteins in the body, but type 1 collagen makes up roughly 90% of a person’s collagen count. Type 1 collagen gives structure to our tendons, bones, connective tissues, and skin. When we’re younger, our bodies produce enough collagen to keep our skin tight and strong. However, as we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, which contributes to thinner skin and wrinkles. Fortunately, there are certain foods and nutrients you can consume to boost your collagen production and keep your skin smoother and stronger for longer. Collagen begins in the body as procollagen, which is created when two amino acids, glycine and proline, combine. Vitamin C aids this process, so any foods with high concentrations of these nutrients help your body produce more collagen. The Protein That Holds Us Together

Egg whites are a great source of proline, along with foods like asparagus, cabbage, and dairy products. Additionally, pork skin, chicken skin, and gelatin all have high levels of glycine. If you want to get your vitamin C levels up, citrus fruits, bell peppers, and strawberries are tasty choices. Watch out for foods and habits that can damage your collagen production, like eating lots of refined sugar, exposing your skin to too much sunshine, and smoking.

By adopting habits and diets that enhance collagen production, you can keep yourself looking younger and feeling better, even as you get older.

What Will Dentistry Look Like in 2050?

HOW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COULD CHANGE DENTAL VISITS

In this futuristic world, you book your appointment with your dentist’s AI software. It networks with your own AI to find the perfect time slot. When you arrive, you’re immediately shown to your treatment room. Real people scan and clean your teeth, but every bit of information is cataloged by a computer. AI programs review your scans, identify and diagnose problem spots, and alert your dentist so they don’t miss them. When your dentist wants to review scans with you, they ask the AI to pull up a certain image, and it does it as quickly as Alexa zeroes in on a song. If you want a second opinion, your dentist can ask their software to check your X-ray readings against those of other dentists around the world. Companies are already creating AI platforms that can do all of these things and more. In fact, this kind of high-tech dental appointment could happen long before 2050! AI will never replace dentists, but it’s an effective tool to help them diagnose patients, and it can also act as a safety net when they’re overworked. If you’re curious about new technologies being explored in the dental world, ask on your next visit — the answers might surprise you.

Today, dental treatments are faster, easier, and less invasive than ever before. But according to Dental Economics and Healthcare in America, the gains dentistry has made so far are just the beginning. New advances in technology are coming that could revolutionize the field in the next 30 years — including the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). Today, dentistry is human-centric. Patients rely on their dentists for the most important parts of treatment, including spotting any problems with their teeth. In most offices, it’s also up for the dental staff to get patients scheduled, sort through files, pull up X-rays, and catalog patient information. If you want a second opinion on something, you need to seek out another dentist. In 2050, that might not be the case! Step out of 2020 for a minute. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and leap forward three decades. Cars probably aren’t flying yet, and maybe there isn’t a colony on Mars. But one place you can see change is in the treatment chair.
