JULY 2022

throughout my summer vacations, but when I was a junior in college, I needed an internship since I was majoring in finance. I didn’t take the formal internship track. Instead, I called the firm where my

I had never contacted my parents’ investment advisor to get the internship, so you can imagine how surprised he was to see me working there. He was impressed with my initiative to get the position and transferred me to his team, which meant a lot less cold calling. He specialized in soft selling where he would talk to people who already knew of our company and what we did. Seeing his approach and how he successfully brought customers on board became an invaluable learning experience for me.

TAKING YOUR 1ST STEP INTO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD LESSONS I’VE LEARNED

As we progress through summer, young adults from our community will be applying at businesses to secure their first job. It’s an exciting time in their lives. They’ll learn many useful lessons to enhance their future careers. This was certainly true for me, and I still utilize some of those lessons every day. When I was younger, I did some smaller projects at the cleaners but didn’t officially start working there until I was 16. I helped work the front counter where I would take clothes and give them back to our customers. I was there four days a week for about six hours each day learning as much as I could about the business and how to be an efficient employee. Those first few years of work really helped me develop a strong work ethic. We were always busy, so I had to learn how to stay productive while conversing with people. I wanted to get to know our customers

Additionally, you can join clubs to make you more aware of internship opportunities and career fairs. And if you get turned down the first time, don’t give up. Other opportunities will come along the way. Starting a first summer job or internship is an incredibly exciting experience in our lives. It can be stressful at times, but if you open yourself up to new lessons and ideas, you will walk away with experience to make you a stronger professional.

WASHING, WET CLEANING, AND DRY CLEANING

Leaving the nest can be tough for young adults. There are so many things to remember, like making sure they have all the right supplies and remembering to keep important paperwork. So, before your child heads off to college, help them strengthen these three skills. HOW TO ASK FOR HELP Being capable starts with understanding what you need and asking for it. By having your child order their own food at a restaurant, make medical and dental appointments for themselves, and check out at the supermarket alone, you’ll be helping your child develop independence while encouraging them to take the lead. HOW TO SEAMLESSLY GET FROM POINT A TO POINT B When your teen leaves the house, they’ll be traveling on their own on a bus, on a plane, by car, and by foot, so they’ll need to understand how to navigate airports, subway stations, bus hubs, and roads. Ask your child to give you directions when describing how to get to the mall or have them even drive you there if they are licensed. This will reduce stress during solo travels, and they’re less likely to feel overwhelmed if plans unexpectedly change. Ready to Succeed 3 Important Life Skills to Teach Your Teen

What’s the Difference?

At Janet Davis Cleaners, we offer wet-cleaning and dry-cleaning services. We’re often asked what the difference is between the two. People often hear wet cleaning and immediately imagine we wash the clothes just as you can at home. While we do wash some garments, wet cleaning and washing are two entirely different methods of cleaning clothing. Wet cleaning is a highly technical and professional method of washing. It involves using water and biodegradable detergents rather than chemical solvents. Wet cleaning is the most natural way to clean and is more effective and gentler than hand washing at home. The machines are powerful and programmable. Wet cleaning also uses chemistry to buffer the clothing from the water. Interestingly enough, you can wet-clean a “dry-clean only” item, but you can’t wash those items without the risk of shrinkage or damage. You probably already know dry cleaning uses liquid solvents instead of water. A solvent is any substance that can dissolve another substance. Water is the most common solvent on the planet, but it's far from the only solvent. Most people don’t realize how harsh water actually is. If you try to wash a napkin or tissue at home, you’ll be left with a million little pieces. If you were to dry clean a napkin, it would come back intact. A dry cleaning machine looks like a normal front-load washer but it has a tank on the bottom that stores the solvent, and a distillation machine on the side to purify the solvent between loads. Dry cleaning protects the brightness and color of your garments while also preserving their original texture, finish, and sheen. Occasionally, we will wet-clean an item if it has a stain that won’t come out with dry cleaning. Vomit and alcohol stains don’t come out with dry cleaning at all, so they need to be wet-cleaned. Our team is well trained in both wet cleaning and dry cleaning. We will take the utmost care of your garments. Please contact us if you have any questions about our processes.

HOW TO HANDLE EMERGENCIES

When children are fairly young, they learn how to call 911 in the event of life-threatening and serious emergencies. But other emergencies tend to pop up in life that don’t necessarily warrant a call to the

police. Show your child how to put on a spare tire, turn off utilities, patch a hole in clothing, and other basic but necessary skills so they don’t panic when something goes wrong in their dorm room or on the road. As a parent, it’s your job to teach your children the right skills to set them up for success and independence and to take care of themselves when they finally go off on their own.

CAN I SHIP YOU MY WEDDING GOWN? Short Answer? Yes.

Our customers often ask us if it’s possible for them to ship us a wedding gown to be cleaned and preserved. They may have a niece or close relative who lives up in Traverse City, or maybe even in an entirely different state, who needs their gown preserved after the big day. You, your friend, or your family member can definitely ship us a wedding gown to be cleaned and preserved. There really isn’t too much of a difference between shipping your gown or dropping it off at one of our locations. When we send it back, we’ll add an extra box around the preservation box, which we will fully wrap in plastic. We ship gowns all the time, and they always arrive at their destination perfectly safe. The only real difference is the paperwork. After we receive the gown, we’ll go over what we find with you over the phone or through email. Once the dress has been cleaned, we’ll invite you in to take a look at it. If you’re too far to stop by the cleaners, we’ll send over pictures before it goes to the preservation step. There is no

additional fee besides the cost of shipping if you have to ship your gown to us. Whether you stop by our location or ship your gown to us for preservation, you can expect high-quality care and service. “I had my wedding dress preserved here. Very easy process. They will send you text notifications when it is available for pickup. It looks beautiful and I love the packaging, information sheet, and warranty it comes with, too! Would recommend!”

If you have any questions or want to ship your wedding gown to us to be cleaned and preserved, give us a call at 248-543-0340.

Our culture loves to eat! If you're a traveling foodie, you are in luck: Add these three summer festivals to your must-visit list for this summer or future food-finding trips. PIEROGI FEST (INDIANA) July 29–31; PierogiFest.net The Polish pierogi is a humble food: mashed potatoes and cheese wrapped in soft dough and either fried, baked, or grilled to perfection. But simplicity should be celebrated! In Whiting, Indiana, Pierogi Fest is a three-day

affair that brings in more than 300,000 people for events like a Polka Parade, a pierogi toss, and, of course, pierogies stuffed with everything from cheese to alligator meat. Of course, there’s also a beer garden, because as the organizers put it, “Beer and pierogies go together as well as peanut butter and jelly.” GRACE JAMAICAN JERK FESTIVAL (NEW YORK) July 31; JerkFestivalNY.com
