TheMohawk Nation and the United Coun- ties of Prescott-Russell council will meet to talk about a controversial cement plant project proposed for a site near the Village of L’Orignal in Champlain Township. “There is going to be an open public meeting with the Mohawk council,” said Stéphane Parisien, chief administrator for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), during the April 12 committee of the whole session. Last month the counties council received a letter from Serge Simon, current elected Grand Chief of theMohawk Council of Kane- satake. The community is located along the Ottawa River in Québec, downstream from Prescott-Russell. Chief Simon expressed objection to the cement plant project that ColacemCanada Inc. wants to build near L’Orignal in Cham- plain Township. The concern is that runoff from cement plant production into the Ot- tawa River could affect traditional native hunting and fishing habitats downstream and also impact some communities which may use the Ottawa River as their mainwater source. Currently, the proposed cement plant project is in limbo pending appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) about an application by Colacem Canada for a rezo- ning amendment to the UCPR’s Official Plan.
