ADVERTORIAL

TasTAFE Drysdale collaborating with industry to address skills and labour shortages TasTAFE Drysdale has formed a new industry advisory group to explore the workforce development needs of the tourism and hospitality industry as it recovers from COVID-19. The Drysdale Industry Advisory Group (IAG), made up of representatives from businesses across the state, held its first roundtable in Launceston on September 15. TasTAFE CEO, Grant Dreher, said the focus of the IAG was on collaboration to address skills and labour force shortages and determine training priorities for Drysdale. Employability skills and sector-wide challenges to attract, train and retain staff were also a key focus of roundtable discussions. “The role of the IAG is to exchange ideas and provide constructive feedback and an employer perspective to help inform Drysdale’s training. But we also want

industry to be part of the solution – by working with us to support student outcomes and be more involved in our training.” Ideas discussed included a guest speaker program and industry co-design of activities or programs as well as connecting employers with Drysdale graduates at the end of their training. “A good example of existing industry involvement is TasTAFE’s partnership with the Australian Culinary Federation (ACF) which provides support and mentoring for young apprentice chefs as they undertake their training,” Mr Dreher said. The Drysdale IAG will meet again in 2023 and meetings of smaller, industry-specific groups will also be organised. “I hope this will be a new start and a new way forward for TasTAFE’s relationship with the tourism and hospitality industry,” Mr Dreher said.
