FROM PUMPKINS TO PAWS OCTOBER AT RINEHARDT INJURY ATTORNEYS

October is one of our favorite months of the year; the air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and Mansfield is buzzing with fall traditions. At Rinehardt Injury Attorneys, we’re celebrating the season with a full calendar of community events, giving back, and of course a little fun. On Oct. 11, we’re proud to be Long John Labrador sponsors of the fourth annual Richland County Humane Society’s Dogs, Donuts & Drinks .5K Walk . Yes, you read that right — point five! It’s the kind of race anyone can finish, especially when the finish line promises doughnuts and a cold drink in downtown Mansfield at the Phoenix Beer Garden. Tickets are $35 and participants receive a beer (or root beer for kids!), a human and dog doughnut, a T-shirt, and a raffle ticket — all while raising money for the Humane Society of Richland County! It’s always a great day with lots of laughter, wagging tails, and community spirit. Later this month, our team will roll up our sleeves at the Richland County Animal Shelter. Last year, we painted two rooms that are now used as cheerful playrooms for volunteers and the dogs. This year, we’re taking on a bigger project: transforming a large room into two new spaces — one for playtime and one to serve as an adoption room where families can meet their future furry companions. We love knowing our work helps brighten the lives of the animals and the people who care for them. And since October also means Halloween, we’re bringing back our Dog Costume Photo Contest on Facebook! Two years ago, the entries were so creative and adorable that we knew we had to do it again. This year, we can’t wait to see your pups dressed up in their spooky, silly, or downright clever costumes. The winner will receive a $100 Amazon gift card , and we’ll feature their photo in our November newsletter. We’re also excited to sponsor the Howl-o-Ween Pet Festival for Vets with Pets on Oct. 18 in downtown Shelby. This all-day event (11 a.m.–6 p.m.) will feature a pet costume parade judged by veterans, prizes, food trucks, bounce houses, games, a DJ, and more! Vets with

Pets was founded by a Combat Action Veteran who, during a time of financial hardship, needed emergency veterinary care for his companion. Today, the organization helps provide financial assistance for the pets of veterans in need of urgent medical care. We’re honored to support a cause that brings joy to the community while caring for those who have served our country and their loyal companions. October is about fun, community, and connection, and we’re excited to share it all with you. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating, whether it’s by cheering us on at the .5K, following along as we transform the shelter, or submitting your dog’s best costume for a chance to win. Together, we’re making this season one to remember. – Hillary Rinehardt

Our Staff Favorite Hallowe

Kristin: Halloween is huge in our family. From the time I was a little girl, my mom would make a big deal about Halloween. I would always have slumber parties, and she would also create adorable treats for everyone. When I had my daughter Addie, this love of Halloween carried over to her. Her first Halloween, she was 6 months old, and we dressed her up as a pumpkin and pushed her around town in a stroller for trick-or-treating. Every year I would make very elaborate handmade costumes up until she stopped trick-or- treating (which may have been

Alyssa: My favorite Halloween tradition is taking my kids trick-or- treating with our best friends who all have kids the same age! I can’t resist a good Reese’s pumpkin, and my favorite scary movie is “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

later than typically recommended, lol). Over the years, she was the robot Bender from “Futurama,” Sally from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” a corpse bride, and Bellatrix Lestrange. Her 10th year, she dressed up as a Weeping Angel from “Doctor Who.” She even entered a contest at the mall and won first place for best costume! Halloween was and always will be a very special time for my family!

Courtney: Halloween has always been a huge deal in my family, mostly because my mom absolutely LOVES it. She and her friends started out years ago making their own haunted houses in basements and garages, but over time, it grew into something much bigger. She collects props all year long and has built up quite the collection so by October, she can put together some pretty incredible setups. Last year, they created a haunted house on a friend’s farm, and it turned into a 25-minute experience complete with creepy sound effects, flashing lights, and “actors” jumping out to scare people. The path even wound through a cornfield, which made it extra spooky. Afterward, everyone gathered for a party with food, candy, costumes, and a tractor ride for the kids. It’s one of my favorite traditions because it’s not just about decorations. It’s about the fun and creativity my mom pours into making Halloween special for everyone.

Suzanna: Halloween is my favorite holiday! My favorite Halloween traditions (besides eating candy) are the parts of the season that are crafty and creative and get you into the spooky spirit. Nothing beats carving pumpkins; turning a pumpkin into a goofy or ghoulish masterpiece is always a good time. Especially when you make a little competition out of it with family and friends! And, of course, there’s the hunt for the perfect costume. Brainstorming, planning, and putting together a fun or spooky outfit is a Halloween highlight, and it’s always a blast to show it off and share some laughs with friends and family.

Pumpkin Bread

Brilynn: When I was little, we never did anything extravagant for Halloween, but since I have had kids of my own, we have started some new ones. My little family goes to a pumpkin patch each year and picks out the perfect pumpkin to carve for Halloween.

INGREDIENTS For the Topping: • 5 tbsp packed light brown sugar • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/8 tsp salt For the Bread: • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1 (15 oz) can unsweetened pumpkin purée

• 1 tsp salt • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg • 1/8 tsp ground cloves • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 cup packed light brown sugar • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 4 oz cream cheese, cut into 12 pieces • 4 large eggs • 1/4 cup buttermilk • 1 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped fine

DIRECTIONS For the Topping

Beth: My family’s favorite Halloween traditions include decorating our house and the outside yard, including flying our pirate flag and, of course, Halloween candy: chocolate anything! No scary movies for us, though!

1. Using fingers, mix all ingredients together in bowl until well combined and topping resembles wet sand; set aside. For the Bread 1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 F. Grease two 8 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch (or 9x5) loaf pans. Whisk flour, baking powder, and baking soda together in bowl. 2. Combine pumpkin purée, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in large saucepan over medium heat. Cook mixture, stirring constantly, until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, 6–8 minutes. 3. Remove pot from heat; stir in granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil, and cream cheese until combined. Let mixture stand for 5 minutes. Whisk until no visible pieces of cream cheese remain and mixture is homogeneous. 4. Whisk together eggs and buttermilk. Add egg mixture to pumpkin mixture and whisk to combine. Fold flour mixture into pumpkin mixture until combined (some small lumps of flour are okay). Fold walnuts into batter. Scrape batter into prepared pans. Sprinkle topping evenly over top of each loaf. Bake until a skewer inserted in center of loaf comes out clean, 45–50 minutes if using 8-inch loaf pans, 35–40 minutes if using 9-inch loaf pans. 5. Let breads cool in pans on wire rack for 20 minutes. Remove breads from pans and let cool for at least 1 1/2 hours. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Hillary: I loved Halloween when I was a kid (mostly for the candy). When I had kids of my own, I had so much fun decorating the house, planning parties for their friends and classmates, and putting together costumes. I don’t really sew, but I also don’t love the store-bought costumes. I loved trying to repurpose clothing and accessories to make their costumes come to life, and there is a lot to be said for a glue gun! One of my favorite years was when Aaron dressed up as Austin Powers, Rachel was his sidekick girl spy, and Hannah was Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz.” John is not a fan of Halloween, but one year, we attended a costume party and dressed up as Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee!
