Job Description
Key responsibilities Strategy, investment and implementation (25%) • Identify and prioritise energy demand and cost reduction opportunities • Lead on applications for funding, project managing and implementing identified opportunities to ensure successful delivery • Apply engineering principles in relation to building services design to deliver measurable change • Contribute to Imperial’s Building Engineering Services Particular Requirements (BESPR) • Support the wider Engineering team with metering strategies and review metering algorithms Systems performance and development (25%) • Review and monitor databases to ensure they meet internal and external requirements, identify gaps or shortfalls in database information and as necessary, source related information • Deliver mechanisms to inform key stakeholders within and outside of Imperial’s community • Work with the Energy Manager to implement and manage an ISO 50001 compliant Energy Management System (EnMS) Analysis and Reporting, Finance (15%) • Analyse and interpret data, present results and put forward recommendations through briefings, presentations or written reports. Facilitate the interpretation of specific issues/problems and support decision making • Provide reports /information as required with regards to: utilities spend, budgets or projects • Identify projects and opportunities; assess, quantify and present the cost and benefit of opportunities • Prepare business cases and applications for internal and external funding. Manage the implementation of projects and ensure resources are managed effectively Customer service (10%) • Work with the Energy Data Analyst in preparing energy and carbon data for use in presentations and reports, including staff, students and external publications
Job Title: Energy Systems Engineer
• Provide specialist advice and recommendations within professional guidelines to support decision making Legal and regulatory compliance (10%) • Responsible for ensuring Imperial is compliant with energy and environmental legislation and reporting, including: ESOS, UK ETS, DECs, SECR, EMR • Manage the submission of the government CRC tax and supporting declarations, HMRC compliance and returns Management (5%) • Project Management of energy reduction initiatives • Responsible for the organisation and delivery of specialised work, to meet departmental objectives • Work with other members of the Engineering, Energy and Environment team and wider Property Division toward Imperial’s objectives Management Reporting (5%) • Produce reports for senior management regarding projects, utility expenditure and procurement External communications (5%) • Represent Imperial externally at events, including with local and central government bodies Continuous Improvement • Identify and make recommendations (e.g. in policies, procedures and standards) to contribute to the operational improvement of the department • Improve specialist, technical and professional capability and expertise through appropriate development or professional activity Other duties • Ensuring accuracy of database, attending various project and engineering meetings, assisting Energy and Environment Officer and Energy Manager when necessary

Purpose of the Post The primary purpose of the Energy Systems Engineer is to continuously improve the energy performance of Imperial’s estate, reducing operating cost through reduced expenditure on utilities. The post holder will achieve this through application of sound engineering skills and principles to existing and new infrastructure, analysis and interpretation of data, database and information management, implementation of strategies and opportunities to affect energy, cost and carbon reduction.

Education Essential: • Degree qualified in engineering, energy, other relevant degree or formal training plus experience in a similar or related role(s) Desirable: • Holds second degree or Masters in above subjects and areas Experience Essential: • Experience in a similar role working to improve the energy performance of an organisation through the application of engineering skills and principles • Knowledge and understanding of building service and design • Experience of large complex databases and how to interpret and translate into understandable information for reports and presentations. Desirable: • Track record of implementing measures to reduce energy use across a complex estate • Experience managing technically complex projects • Track record of writing business cases and securing funding for projects Knowledge Essential: • Detailed operational knowledge and expertise in the field of energy management, building services and design • High level of understanding of engineering and technical principles related to energy efficiency in buildings Desirable: • Detailed knowledge and understanding of databases and how to manipulate and represent data in an informative manner • Knowledge of utility specific industry processes related to management of electricity, gas and water connections
Skills & Abilities Essential: • Ability to work to tight deadlines, managing and prioritising time effectively • Excellent team skills, with the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships (internally and externally) at all levels • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate with many different stakeholders • Ability to analyse data, draw conclusions and present them in a clear and concise format • Proactive, innovative able to apply specialist technical knowledge to anticipate and find solutions to problems • Numerate and able to report on a budget to senior managers • An understanding of the need for excellent customer service and an ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with key staff and external contacts • Ability to complete work in area of responsibility within deadlines and to agreed standards with proven ability to plan and organise own and team activity ensuring plans complement and feed into broader operational plans • Ability to apply appropriate expertise, judgement and decision making to deliver professional services to meet the customer requirements • Strong interpersonal skills including ability to negotiate, motivate, influence, persuade and build relationships • Excellent time management skills, the ability to plan, prioritise and juggle competing tasks to meet deadlines under pressure Desirable: • Confident user of computer software packages at intermediate level, including Microsoft Office products, together with energy database management, TEAM Sigma and an understating of BEMS (TREND)
