Healthcare is about people who selflessly and heroically deliver it in the face of adversity with compassion.

Message from Chris

As we progress through the year, February has proven to be eventful and inspiring!

We celebrated Black History Month, a time to recognize the immeasurable contributions that African Americans have made toward American History. We highlighted Black pioneers in health care and placed a spotlight on our leaders in health care at the facilities. Celebrating Black History Month reminds us of our health system's mission, which focuses on equity and comprehensive, quality health care for all. In February, we hosted our annual Legislative Breakfast. We had the unique opportunity to host our elected officials at the Jacobi campus. It was a successful event. Our central office colleagues provided a plethora of information to educate our electeds about our health system's city, state, and federal updates, focusing on the state budget priorities. I am thankful to all our elected officials who attended for their steadfast partnership. Also, thanks to our dedicated community advisory board chairs and members at Jacobi and NCB and our executive leaders for their collaboration and commitment to community service. In addition to the Legislative Breakfast, we hosted a press conference for Council Member Amanda Farías, who awarded a check for $25K to support Jacobi's Stand Up to Violence program. The Stand Up to Violence (SUV) program is the nation's first hospital-run Cure Violence-based program. Lastly, a special thank you to Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr., who visited Jacobi to learn about our hospital's services and the comprehensive person- centered care provided for our patients. Conclusively, join me in congratulating Dr. Frederick Nagel and the NCB Emergency Department teams for receiving accreditation from the ACEP Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation Program (GEDA). This accreditation demonstrates that NCB is focused on the highest standards of care for older adults in the Bronx communities we serve. Thank you all for your steadfast commitment to health care. Remember, face masks are still required facility-wide. Keep yourselves, our patients, colleagues, and loved ones safe and healthy.

Chris Mastromano

PATHWAY TO PLANETREE

REFER Looking back at our accomplishments in 2022, we see much to be grateful for. As our journey with Planetree continues, we understand the importance of caring for patients, caring for staff, and caring for our community. We also embrace the philosophy that there is “nothing about me, without me,” which places the voices of our staff and patients at the center of just about everything we do. Doing this improves the experience of person-centered care and the services we provide to our patients and community. Thanks to our partnership with Planetree, we took a close look at our environment of care at Jacobi through our Caring Culture Survey results guided by Planetree’s team. We were happy to report that despite the starts and stops experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. We see that our desire to embrace a culture of caring remains strong. How is this so? Let’s take a look. The survey looked at personal, coworker, and leader caring and was separated into two groups -direct and indirect caregivers represented by clinical and non-clinical staff. While looking into results from both 2021 and 2022, we noticed a change in how the team feels cared for by our colleagues, leaders, and others. The results showed improvement in 23 out of 24 questions, with 9 out of 10 showing statistical significance over our 2021 benchmark*. Our overall mean score in 2022 also showed statistical significance for our Indirect Caregivers*. Significant signs of strength were seen all around!

Tracking quality improvement measures such as this are great ways to align with what matters to our staff and help us build on programs that create a positive workplace culture.

Coming soon: 2023 Care Experience Expo on Wednesday, April 26th & The Planetree Lived Experience Tuesday-Thursday on June 6th, 7th and 8th. Please mark the dates on your calendar for these important events!

What does a child life specialist do?

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | February 2023

Marsha Moriah, MS, CCLS Associate Director Child Life Department of Pediatrics

Certified Child Life Specialists are educated and clinically trained in the developmental impact of hospitalization, illness, and injury. Their role seeks to help improve patient and family care, satisfaction, and overall healthcare experience. Infants, children, and youth confront various stressful and unexpected traumatic events such as chronic illness, hospitalization, the death of a loved one, or the aftermath of violent acts or natural disasters that can impact their ability to cope. These experiences related to healthcare can lead to feelings of fear, confusion, loss of control, and isolation that can inhibit their development and adversely affect their physical and emotional health and well-being. Certified Child Life Specialists help pediatric patients and their families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss, and grief. We provide evidence-based, developmentally, and psychologically appropriate interventions, including therapeutic play, procedure preparation, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. Studies show child life services result in cost savings, including reduced length of stay, decreased sedation needs, and improved family satisfaction and ratings of overall healthcare experience.

Bronx Council Member Amanda Farías Allocated $25,000 to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi's Stand Up to Violence Program

Stand up to Violence has seen a 59% decrease in gunshot wound victims in the precinct areas they service

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | February 2023

On February 8, The Bronx, NY- Council Member Amanda Farías presented a check of $25,000 to support Jacobi’s Stand Up to Violence program. The Stand Up to Violence (SUV) program is the first hospital-run Cure Violence based program in the nation. At the press conference SUV reported that they have seen a 59% decrease in the chance for violent re-injury in SUV patients and a 59% decrease in gunshot wound victims in the precinct areas that SUV serves. The Council Member has committed funds to aid this critical program in fighting gun violence as the public health crisis that it is. The SUV program began in 2014 and exists within the 49th, 47th, and 43rd precincts in the Bronx. The 43rd precinct is within Council District 18, which Council Member Farías represents. At the press conference in Jacobi Medical Center, Council Member Amanda Farías stated, “This program is the success that it is because of how ingrained our SUV leaders are in the communities they service. As the Council Member who represents the 43rd I am grateful for your work and honored to have a partner like you in our backyard. Gun violence is not caused by a singular issue, nor will it be solved with a singular solution. In communities like ours, in Soundview, Castle Hill, Clason Point and more, gun violence is something we hear about and deal with more than any of us would like to. But the work that SUV is doing makes a difference and I know that together we will continue to bring down the rates of gun violence in our communities, especially for our young people. Senator Chuck Schumer was right here in 2021 talking about SUV, and he said ‘This program works but it needs some money.’ Well, I am thrilled to answer that call and invest in the SUV program today.”

Employee Resource Groups PROMOTING EQUITY

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi created the Jacobi Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee in 2021. The committee’s focus is to advance racial and social justice by integrating an equity lens into Jacobi’s operations. Specifically, the committee is dedicated to providing staff spaces to foster inclusiveness for employees. When employees feel safe to socially identify, this will impact employee satisfaction and support recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups. Who is JEDI?

The Nursing Clinical Ladder is a structured program to provide clinical staff nurses with an opportunity for career advancement while remaining in the clinical setting, providing direct patient care. It is used to recognize advanced performance and professional development. This year we want to exceed the number of 2022 clinical ladder applicants and increase the number of applicants to 100. As we pass the midpoint of the Clinical Ladder application period, we are close to eclipsing the number of 2022 Clinical applicants.
