Marsha Moriah, MS, CCLS Associate Director Child Life Department of Pediatrics

Certified Child Life Specialists are educated and clinically trained in the developmental impact of hospitalization, illness, and injury. Their role seeks to help improve patient and family care, satisfaction, and overall healthcare experience. Infants, children, and youth confront various stressful and unexpected traumatic events such as chronic illness, hospitalization, the death of a loved one, or the aftermath of violent acts or natural disasters that can impact their ability to cope. These experiences related to healthcare can lead to feelings of fear, confusion, loss of control, and isolation that can inhibit their development and adversely affect their physical and emotional health and well-being. Certified Child Life Specialists help pediatric patients and their families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss, and grief. We provide evidence-based, developmentally, and psychologically appropriate interventions, including therapeutic play, procedure preparation, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. Studies show child life services result in cost savings, including reduced length of stay, decreased sedation needs, and improved family satisfaction and ratings of overall healthcare experience.
