A Baby is about to be bom. The most important Baby ever to be bom on this earth. “Let us in . . . let Him in . . . out of the cold and the darkness of the night.” Knock . . . knock . . . knock. There is something about that knock of Joseph’s that hurts. The Bible tells us: . . There was no room for them in the inn.” No room! Those are heart-rend ing words. Would we have said that? Isn’t it being said every day? We are all innkeepers, with room for everybody and every thing, but too many do not have room for Him. In our lives . . . shabby stables that they are . . . He may be cradled . . . but we must give Him room. Joseph turns, his shoulders sag ging. Someone says, “ There is a place, if your wife won’t mind. I know where I can fix a place and make it clean. It will be quiet there . . . and warm. . . .” “And so it was that she brought forth her firstborn Son, and w rapped Him in sw add ling clothes, and laid Him in a man ger . . .” (Luke 2:6, 7). In that moment Bethlehem no longer is just a place on the map, but Bethlehem becomes a soul condition. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Without love there could never have been a first Christmas. When Christmas came to Bethlehem, love came, too. And Jesus, who was cradled in the arms of Mary’s love, has shown us that when we throw open the doors o f our hearts and allow His love to move through us, and His light to shine, then His will and His work can be done.
