“It’s important to note that, regardless of whether we are on campus or online, none of our commitments to the mission or philosophy of Keystone have changed,” said John Duhon, co-founder and co-director. “We will continue to attend to each child’s social, emotional, physical, and academic health in a way that is best for them.” One way to attend to emotional health? “Infuse some fun!” Dunning said. “Keystone will launch a space theme this fall as our kids explore the unknown on the Starship Keystone.” Keystone also plans to utilize its 15-acre campus, creating shaded outdoor classrooms that allow for mask-free social distancing. Even in a virtual learning scenario, Keystone plans to open up the campus to small groups of students for outdoor-only activities, like caring for pasture animals, physical education, and art. Keystone Adventure School and Farm Keystone Focuses on Individualizing Education, Regardless of Learning Venue
For sixteen years, Keystone Adventure School and Farm, an accredited preschool and elementary school in Edmond, has been welcoming students to a safe, inclusive learning environment full of the wonder of childhood. When COVID-19 shuttered schools across the nation, Keystone pivoted to offering live online classes and experiences in pasture, art, music, and more. Teachers met one-on-one with students and in small groups. “Our goal was to make sure that the relationships between teachers and students stayed strong, and that the students would not experience a gap in their learning,” said Jenny Dunning, Keystone co-founder and co-director. To prepare for the challenges of the upcoming year, Keystone assembled a Task Force of experts to partner with the Board of Directors in making decisions specific to the Keystone community. They created a scientific metric for determining whether school would be fully on campus, a hybrid model of 2-3 days a week on campus, or in a virtual learning scenario.
