Communities Drive Change

Herzegovina, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway and Scotland to explore the vital role that museums and heritage sites have in addressing past wrongdoings and promoting peace and social justice today. Symposium panels offered space to reflect on and engage in peer-to-peer exchange about the power of museums and heritage sites as agents of social transformation, countering discriminatory narratives, and building equitable community partnerships. The symposium also focused on the challenges of working with contentious heritage – such as when competing narratives and conflicting voices coexist – and how museums and cultural institutions can serve as platforms for productive dialogue. Following the symposium, ICSC’s Global Networks team conducted a workshop on its Correcting the Record methodology, which supports Sites of Conscience and like-minded institutions to expand their social impact by establishing new organizational approaches and practices while ensuring their exhibits and narratives are inclusive. The workshop strengthened participants’ ability to engage in a deep and honest assessment of all aspects of their work, adopt empowering and equitable co-creation practices with their communities, and establish and interpret repositories in an inclusive and equitable manner.
