Lessons Learned from 25 Years of Resistance and Remembrance
Local Solutions Have Global Impact
With lessons learned from similar judicial processes in The Gambia, CONAREG monitored the country’s Stadium Massacre trial, which began in September 2022, by sharing key developments in the trial with the public, combating misinformation and advocating for increased accessibility and security measures to be taken on behalf of survivors. The efforts paid off when, in July 2024, the former dictator of Guinea and seven military commanders were found guilty of crimes against humanity for the Stadium Massacre. This landmark verdict is the first prosecution of such crimes in Guinea. Asmaou Diallo, President of AVIPA, a Site of Conscience in the country and a member of CONAREG, said: “This victory is the result of our collective efforts, tenacity and conviction. We honor every partner and victim who stood firm for nearly 15 years. We celebrate obtaining justice and restoring hope to all political victims. We will continue to fight until every victim is compensated. This victory belongs to the strength and determination of the victims.”
