Membership to the Recreation Center is open to users who are residents of the City of DeSoto and non-residents. A photo I.D. is required to apply for a new membership (Photocopies will not be accepted). A parent or legal guardian must be present to register an individual under the age of 18.

AIKIA Karate (ages 5-17) This class will teach children ways to channel their energy in a positive way, self discipline, respect for others, self-defense, improved memory skills and physical conditioning. Combined styles of American Kenpo and American Tae Kwon Do are emphasized in this class. Master Lloyd Ploeger is the class instructor. For more information, call (972) 217- 6363. Registration Overview A variety of classes and programs are available for all ages and areas of interest. A registration fee must be paid in full before attending any class. Some classes may require extra fees and supplies. Some of the classes have a minimum and maximum number of participants. Pre-registration is highly recommended. If the minimum is not met within 48 hours of the class start date, then the class is subject to cancellation. If a class is canceled, then the participant may request to transfer to another class or receive a refund check by mail. Participants will be notified of any classes that have been canceled or rescheduled. In the event that a participant wants to withdraw from a class, he or she must complete a refund request form prior to the second class meeting to get a full refund or a transfer. Inclusion Policy • Participate must complete registration form (attached) 14 calendar days prior to scheduled event/service to Recreation Center. • Registration form received (date stamped) and reviewed by Supervisor. • Staff contacts appropriate agency/organization to schedule an assessment of the participant. • Participant is evaluated with parent/guardian. • Agency/organization recommends plan for inclusion or provides a referral to an agency/ organization to provide similar recreational program/service. • Concerns and request should be placed in writing and include information on the specific program/service, location of program, requested accommodation, and/or incident/occurrence. • Communicate directly with the Parks Managing Director, any concerns, which are not resolved within 14 calendar days by the program facility, and or any compliance violations.

Ballet - Beginner Level Students are given the opportunity to move, stretch, and improve self-confidence while being introduced to basic ballet concepts, body alignment, posture, locomotor skills, as well as develop self-expression through creative movement. Everyone, age 50 and over, is welcome at the DeSoto Senior Activity Center, where active seniors of today can participate in a variety of activities. The center provides many recreational and social opportunities; the congregant meal program, blood pressure screenings, tables games, dances, entertainment, travel, exercise, cultural events, volunteer opportunities, spanish classes, nutrition and health education. We’re Here 4U2 is an interactive program that consists of people interacting for the better good, to help each other, discussing the impact of doing for others, sharing resources, ideas, and just have a good time gathering with others. We meet bi-weekly on Wednesday at 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Book Club Our volunteer-led book club goes beyond simply reading and discussing books. You’ll have a chance to hear and discuss viewpoints different than your own, you’ll meet new people who share your interests, and keep your brain sharp.

Nutrition Program Our Senior Nutrition Program, is a daily lunch program that ensures a free and nutritious meal for seniors ages 60 and older. The program is sponsored in part by the Dallas Area Agency on Aging, and the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. Ages under 60 is $4/person.

Chair Excercise If you’re looking for a fun, energetic way to get your daily exercise, then you should check out chair exercise class. This instructor led class may help strengthen muscles, reduce the risk of falls, increase body flexibility and balance.

Pavilions are available March 1 through October 31. Pavilions are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can start booking your reservation from January 1 through October 31.

Cleaning the Facility The reserving party is responsible for cleaning the facility. The Parks and Recreation Department may not be able to clean pavilions between reservations. Tables and immediate grounds must be cleared of litter at the conclusion of the reservation period. Bounce Houses Bounce houses are allowed in city parks however, the bounce house vendor must provide a generator with all bounce house rentals.
